The Zwaanendael Merman is an example of folk art or sailor's art from the mid-19th century. It was conceived as a prank or a side show curiosity at a time when sea captains traveled more frequently to exotic ports than before and when people were trying to learn more about the science behind human origins. Other names for creatures of this sort are "Fiji Merman", "Devil Fish", and "Jenny Hanivers". The Zwaanendael Merman was given to a Lewes family by an old sea captain who once visited them.
The History of the Zwaanendael Merman
In the tradition of P.T. Barnum's sideshow curiosities, the Zwaanendael Merman elicits disbelief and wonder. He represents a time in history when the mysteries of the world were unfolding: the incredible seemed possible and the fantastic made sense.
The Zwaanendael Merman belonged to the Martin family for nearly a century after being presented to a member of the family by an old sea captain. Mrs. Martin's possessions were put up for auction after her death. Her nephew set aside, however, the Merman for display at the Zwaanendael Museum in 1941 and remained on display as a loan intermittently for the following four decades. In 1985, the Merman was being sold at an estate sale upon the death of the nephew. Citizens of Lewes and members of the Lewes Historical Society got together, collected donations, and purchased the Merman for $250. He was then presented as a gift to the Zwaanendael Museum by the Lewes Historical Society in 1985. Many generations of visitors have enjoyed seeing the Merman since he was first put on display in 1941, adults bring their children and grandchildren in to see him.
Transformed into a leviathan monster, Mer-Man now exudes mutagenic ooze as he battles with vicious fervor!

今天下班得很晚，但事實上工作的量比平常少得多
甚至有些刻意得緩慢。
緩慢的原因是因為遇見了一個年輕人，
也請原諒我冠以年輕人(18歲)的名義給他，
因為我的靈魂太老，太自以為老。
時間的緩慢的流逝，卻快速得在我的身體消化，
再和他的對話之間，青春正在流轉著，
也慢慢的將奠基而不願意言說的那塊，喚了起來。
我們交換著一些習以為常的故事，
例如 小時候眷養過孔雀，後來的下場僅只於拿來祭拜媽祖
又或者那鮮豔欲滴的尾巴，在山間裡隱沒的小生物
名叫麗紋石龍子，以及，關於死法的討論與對八家將的熱情。
在他的身上，不太有所顧忌，因此有了全然的主觀，
反之，在吧檯另一邊得我，正面臨了生命轉換的交叉點，
想法，也就不這麼的純粹
當然，嚴格說起來，高三往著大學的路上前進得歷程，也是生命的大岔口。
我的故事是，預計要離開現在這個工作，
原因就很官派的是現在這個工作，在我終極目標的履歷上
幫助並不大，此外，在這咖啡廳這個行業裡，他們所談論而芬芳在嘴角得那些辭令
我全然的感到冷感，甚至遠比不上，
在博物館前遇見的朱仁許 和我之間的小插曲，所令我欣喜的程度。
而預計離開的招數很老派，也不像個大人，
只是有許多時後，故事的結構太過於宛轉，只會成為淡而無味的小說
至於我自己，自詡為個 寫詩(失)的人
那故事就這麼走吧
自以為盛裝的出席了這個工作，老闆依舊怨懟的指向我的錯誤
我承認，雙面人的角色我努力的扮演，
但她的虛假，也不遑多讓。
這反應在那看似溫馨的殼裡，矯造的美好
回到那個孩子，
他說很難找到一個跟他極類似的人，
也說了句很動人的話
「在幾分鐘前，我在你的話語裡聽得出你要離開，
不以為意，反正就只是離開
但我現在覺得，我必須將你紀錄下來」
上一個這麼對我如此感興趣的人，是一個學弟，
那次在草地上上課，和那些孩子一起上課，我告訴自己要有勇氣。
但就如同我一切的文字，太過於英雄主義，與自我中心
這次也一樣，只是這次很明白自己在做些什麼。
有時候你不會知道，人魚有多美麗，
但是，你心中總擁有個童話
