2 days of ‘holiday’ instead of our usual trek to Spain was all we could muster due to the effin pandemic. What hope for Christmas? Who knows?

From Wikipedia: 'Mermaid's Pool is a small pool on Kinder Scout in Derbyshire, England, which, according to legend, is inhabited by a beautiful mermaid who can be seen if you look into the water at sunrise on Easter Sunday. It is also said that its water is salty due to its being connected by an underground passage to the Atlantic.'
I must admit, I'm a little sceptical about both those points...

Occasionally I find one of these washed up on the beach. I used to think it was part of some kind of sea plant but it's actually an amazing nursery for embryos of certain fish. This type of egg case is also known as a mermaid's purse. I believe this one is from a Big Skate. It can contain several embryos. Normally, the case would be anchored at the sea floor and the babies would develop for nine months before hatching!
This one was heavy as if it contained fluid but I couldn't tell whether anything was alive inside. Not very likely, but I carefully placed it back into the ocean.
My 6-foot leash is in the picture for some kind of size reference. The case was larger than my entire hand.

Located inside Saltery Bay Provincial Park is Mermaid Cove where we camped for a few days to enjoy the natural beauty of the BC coastline. This area provided many wonderful photo opportunities.
Early in the morning when the birds are singing and the day is just starting is the best time to pick up the camera and enjoy these peaceful surroundings. I had the cove all to myself and loved exploring the many breathtaking vistas this little cove had to offer.

The white mermaid loves to visit the snowy islands. She is a very happy creature and sings all the time. I heard that the snowy islands destroyed but I don't know by whom and why. Have you seen her swimming in the ocean? I think she is very sad now...

This was taken well after sunset at the tip of Cabo de Gata, in southern Spain. This old volcanic chimney has been the curse of shipping for many centuries. This headland is littered with old volcanic vents, creating reefs of submerged hazards. This particular reef is known as the "mermaids reef" or "arrecife de las sirenas" in spanish. It gained its name from passing sailors spotting what they thought were mermaids basking on the treacherous rocks here. They were in fact a colony of Monk Seals, which sadly are no longer found here!
