"A fisherman and his son are out on the sea at night. His son falls asleep while his father continues to sail. Soon, though, a soft call from the waves catches his attention. Numb and entranced, he solemnly wanders to the edge of the boat, embracing how the waves take him under.
The son, after a few hours, wakes up to see his father gone. He frantically looks over to see if he's fallen, and sees a woman watching him from below. She is more beautiful than Aphrodite herself, and had eyes that soothed even the most frightening of creatures. She smiles, and begins to sing her tune to the child. However, no matter how loud she sang or how melodic her voice was, the boy just stared at her quizzically. Confused, she reaches to the surface, asking him if he can hear her. The boy stares back at her, unsure of what she's saying, and only replies with hand gestures.
The mermaid now understands why he doesn't follow her call: he is deaf. Sweetly, she holds her arms out towards him, touching his ears gently. The child felt her fingers almost vibrate, and soon the boy could slowly start hearing a low rumble. Then, the distant sound of the water moving to and fro reached his ears. He smiles, amazed that he can hear for the first time in his life. He gestures a thank you to his mermaid friend, and she simply smiles back.
The beauty of the deep begins her call once more, seeing the child become fastened still in place. His eyes glazed over, and began walking closer to his helper. The mermaid continues her lulling tune, and warmly holds the child close, before dragging him to the depths."

The king Albatross,

Upon the ocean they float together.
Her ivory comb preening his weathered feathers.
Opening her shell, she beckons him.
Eat the nectar from the garden of darkness.
Spreading mighty wings,
Sea breezes lift him over her,
Sunlight flickers through feathers,
Shadows whisk its touch,
Her skin undulates in ecstasy,
And she sings a song she never knew.
Closing her shell,
New life within.

This mermaid statue was made in bronze by Konstanty Hegel in 1855. The above statue is a zinc cast from the original, placed in Warsaw’s Old Town Market square. The square is one of the city’s top tourist attractions. There are many representations of the Syrenka throughout the city, including another mermaid statue near the River Vistula.

My friend, Skye Donardson, created this gorgeous underwater utopia. It boasts everything you could want to get your mermaid on. Magic... check. Whimsy... check. Color, lots of glorious color, check check check. Being a sim owner myself, I know the challenges of creating a space that not only appeals to my own inner artist, but will appeal to the masses as well. When all is said and done building and creating spaces in Second Life IS art and we all know art is a subjective wench. Not everyone will like what I like and I realized this as I was building my own sim. But I can almost guarantee that most people will enjoy Skye's Mermaid Garden. I will admit I took artistic license and embellished this piece, I mean, I've yet to encounter a fish in Second Life that blows bubbles. Still, the beauty, the color, the sparkly glamour, the whimsy is all Skye. So, get your inner mermaid on and go visit!
