They say there are 4 stages of photography or 4 directions you can go in.

1.The proof shot. Merely documenting that you came and saw.

2. To document.

Similar to the proof shot but more specific and technically accurate.

3. To narrate.

This tends to be a more thought out approach as in telling a story through photos or one single photo. It conveys a message.

4. The creative shot.

This is when you make a conscious decision to capture a certain moment in a certain way or capturing an image to process later as you have a vision for it in her mind.

I tend to lean towards the creative side with 90% of my shots I have a plan for them once i get home to create into something different.

I obviously in turn take proof shots and I do a little with the documenting but I haven't yet dabbled in number 3. The narration part of photos but this year I am going to challenge myself, my mind set and my photography to use my photography to create such images so hopefully by them I can make a difference.

Another busy day in the office, I think word is getting out that Thursday is my last day at work until early July and people are starting to worry.

This happens each time I take time off, so I anticipate it. But still, it makes me shake my head. Panic each time but survive just fine without me there.

Oh well, at least it's reassuring to know I have some job security!

Hope everyone has had a good day.

the only good thing about all this grey grey greeeeey weather and all the rain is, that the mushrooms seem to like it so when the sun came out for about ten minutes a couple of days ago, i just had to shoot them. i've been wanting to shoot more mushrooms ever since i fell in love with machel spence's stream and this tiny little fellow was my favorite.

i'd love to give it another go, but this is the best i could do that day.

LOUGHGALL COUNTRY PARK 18-10-2020 CO ARMAGH

There's something for everyone at Loughgall Country Park.

There is a wide range of activities available ranging from golf to walking, fishing to tennis making this spacious complex a mecca for families, sports enthusiasts and those merely in search of a helping of tranquility.

Walking, cycling, a children's play area, golf, fishing, an adventure trail, trim trail, football pitch and tennis courts are just some of the amenities on offer.

This is merely the beginning of the adventure.

The title is 'stolen' from something José Saramago wrote in one of his many fine novels. I have read most of them and can't remember which one this quote is from? (Whoops, damn, there I go again ending a sentence with a preposition ... original sin to the cognoscenti.)

This is the statue on top of the Court House in Georgetown, Texas. I searched the Internet to find out more about her. Themis is untranslatable. A gift of the gods and a mark of civilized existence, sometimes it means right custom, proper procedure, social order, and sometimes merely the will of the gods. Interestingly, the blind fold and sword weren't added until around the 16th century. I couldn't find out what the blindfold represents. Here's some info from Wikipedia

The personification of abstract concepts is characteristic of the greeks.|date=October 2015}} The ability of the goddess Themis to foresee the future enabled her to become one of the Oracles of Delphi, which in turn led to her establishment as the goddess of divine justice.

Some classical representations of Themis did not show her blindfolded, nor was she holding a sword. The sword is also believed to represent the ability Themis had from cutting fact from fiction; to her there was no middle ground. Themis built the Oracle at Delphi and was herself oracular. According to another legend, Themis received the Oracle at Delphi from Gaia and later gave it to Phoebe.[4]

When Themis is disregarded, Nemesis brings just and wrathful retribution; thus Themis shared the Nemesion temple at Rhamnous. Themis is not wrathful: she, "of the lovely cheeks", was the first to offer Hera a cup when she returned to Olympus distraught over threats from Zeus.[5]

Themis presided over the proper relation between man and woman, the basis of the rightly ordered family (the family was seen as the pillar of the deme), and judges were often referred to as "themistopóloi" (the servants of Themis). Such was also the basis for order upon Olympus. Even Hera addressed her as "Lady Themis." The name of Themis might be substituted for Adrasteia in telling of the birth of Zeus on Crete.

Themis was present at Delos to witness the birth of Apollo. According to Ovid, it was Themis rather than Zeus who told Deucalion to throw the bones of "his Mother" over his shoulder to create a new race of humankind after the deluge.

Hesiod's description and contrast to Dike[edit]

In Greek mythology, Hesiod mentions[6] Themis among the six sons and six daughters of Gaia and Uranus (Earth and Sky). Among these Titans of primordial myth, few were venerated at specific sanctuaries in classical times.

Themis occurred in Hesiod's Theogony as the first recorded appearance of Justice as a divine personage. Drawing not only on the socio-religious consciousness of his time but also on many of the earlier cult-religions, Hesiod described the forces of the universe as cosmic divinities. Hesiod portrayed temporal justice, Dike, as the daughter of Zeus and Themis.

Dike executed the law of judgments and sentencing and, together with her mother Themis, carried out the final decisions of Moirai. For Hesiod, Justice is at the center of religious and moral life, who, independently of Zeus, is the embodiment of divine will. This personification of Dike will stand in contrast to justice viewed as custom or law, and as retribution or sentence.[7]

I have recently tried a sunrise session, which turned out to be one of the most thoroughly unsuccesful ones I have ever had. Sigh. It was a gray, flat, sunrise, merely recognisable as increasing levels of flat greyness. I wandered the countryside hopelessly, trying to enjoy the moment - well, somehow. At last I found myself at the farmstead called Il castelletto (= the little castle). Near the farmstead there is a small woodland and nestled within its shadows there is a spring - a survivor, one of the many springs that once upon a time used to gush from the ground as soon as you dig a hole or stick a pipe into the ground. Such is the nature of this stretch of the Padan plain, where the high and the low plain meet, and the underground waters come so close to ground level. I was curious about the Castelletto spring - would it be gushing as joyfully as ever in this draught time? Yes, it was faithfully gushing out of its pipes, spraying clear water all around, and the green shadows under the canopy of trees that shield it from the heat of the day were so enticing... For a fleeting moment it felt like being at the navel of the world. I set up my gear and tried to capture the simple, quiet beauty of the place. The actual spring is some twenty metres behind the camera, but I was interested in the wooden deck that, in happier times, used to allow classes and families to explore the place, to the children's delight. It looks a bit forlorn and badly in need of maintenace, but its curvy path still feels great. I knew that I would have had a hard time in cloning out some orange safety net, and I have painstakingly had it, and that's it folks... Hope that you have a nice Sunday!

I have processed this picture by blending an exposure bracketing [-2.0/-1.0/0/+1.0/+2.0 EV] by luminosity masks with the Gimp (EXIF data, as usual, refer to the "normal" exposure shot).

Along the journey - post-processing always is a journey of discovery to me - I tried the inverted RGB blue channel technique described by Boris Hajdukovic to give a slight tonal boost to several parts of the scene. As usual, I gave the finishing touches with Nik Color Efex Pro 4. For those who are wondering about those sunrays pouring from the canopy in such a grey morning... well, they are a little addition of mine - the light was so unsatisfactory that I have allowed myself a little bit of poetic licence.

Taken as this Rose was merely beginning to open to the World for the very first time. This photo was taken as daylight was coming to a close and nighttime was about to come upon this Rosebud. The irony was as daylight was giving way to nighttime this Rosebud was just “Coming to Life.” Gratitude and Kindness play a big part in my life being a Husband a Father, a Grandfather, a Brother and a loyal friend. I know the value of values.

Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.

You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand. Woodrow Wilson

I can only record what it put in front of me and on this evening, there was absolutely no way to take a bad photo of what was happening. Around 160 shots total and I narrowed it down to roughly 40 and am having a difficult time picking favorites from that group. There was just the right amount of a gap on the horizon for the sun to get under and light up the clouds that remained after the storms had dissipated. I was surprised that no one joined me that evening to take in the beauty of it all. It began with the golden tones initially and then the red colors began to fill in nicely. The Lord puts up some impressive paintings and I am merely the messenger. Wishing everyone a beautiful day. Peace.

... that I should not merely survive my everyday life...

I am wandering through a muddy existential swamp, struggling to live through my days, constantly on the verge of physical and psychological exhaustion. I have been in need for a good early morning photographic session for months, but sadly lacking the inner spark to actually ignite it. I forced myself, at last, even "knowing" that it would have been an unsatisfactory trip; I was back to the little enchanted world of the meanders of the river Adda, downstream the Lake Como - my little secret garden. A deep peace pulsed around me, if not within myself, a striking variety of bird calls interweaving with each other to compose a rich living tapestry, a symphony unfolding over the low murmurs of the lazy waters.

We have been experiencing a severe drought for the last months, the major Italian rivers reduced to thin, shallow streams snaking along gravel banks. The rivers are revealing long hidden mementos of the last war and even fossilised skeletons of ancient animals living in the Padan plain when it was a swampy savannah.

I have tread on places usually covered with water, nonetheless the river is still able to show its beauty in this specific location.

The sky was still unnervingly cloudless, as it always is lately, yet there was a beautiful, golden light - and the trees were wearing their springy, festive dress, encrusted with amazingly coloured filigrees of budding leaves.

To be honest, I am posting one of the most flawed photos from that session - technically speaking, at last. Yes, it is endowed with a huge lot of technical flaws, but I have fallen in love with it (and no better alternatives capturing that fleeting moment) so I processed the bracketing and I am posting it, hoping that it can still send positive vibes to your souls.

Well, that 'Hylotelephium' for what used to be called merely 'Sedum' is quite the tongue twister if you're not used to such words. The genus was separated from 'Sedum' in 1977 by Hideaki Ohba (1943-) although not all taxonomists agree.

Whatever the case, that name is rather more evocative than mere 'Sedum', Stonecrop. It derives from two Greek words, one more or less for 'wood' or 'woodland' (ὕλη), the other τηλέφιον. In Greek τηλέφιον - as it is used by several ancient naturalists such as Galen - refers simply to the plant Andrachne telephioides, a Spurge. So our plant's name means accurately: Woodland Spurge, in this case growing on rocks (cauticola).

David Gledhill in his standard The Names of Plants curiously - to my mind - derives 'telephium' from τηλέφιλον, meaning 'distant lover', so the plant's name would be literally 'woodland distant lover', whatever that means. Many follow his derivation. Gledhill's Greek word signifies the leaf of some plant used as a charm by which lovers were said to learn whether their love was reciprocal. A romantic derivation indeed. But I see no reason to conjecture that extra λ (l) when the 'Andrachne' derivation is so much simpler and more reasonable.

The common name 'Live-for-ever' tells it like it is: this Stonecrop survives just about any kind of climate and soil!

We do not want merely to see beauty... we want something else which can hardly be put into words- to be united with the beauty we see, to pass into it, to receive it into ourselves, to bathe in it, to become part of it. That is why we have peopled air and earth and water with gods and goddesses, and nymphs and elves. - C.S. Lewis

A dried out waterfall in the Blue Mountains, New South Wales

Merely minutes from getting monsooned, Dad and I rolled into Burlington and nabbed the Burlington Junction's resident center-cab Alco backing up to a cut of empty lumber cars. Not sure why, but seconds after this shot, they'd turn out the light and get off the motor. Maybe they knew the rain was coming and wanted to take cover for the half hour or so it took for the cell to pass.

A photograph is not merely a substitute for a glance.

It is a sharpened vision.

It is the revelation of new and important facts.

Another shot of the mighty San Juan mountains from one of the many county roads leading out to Ridgway. I encountered this viewpoint as we came round a corner and suddenly it looked like the snowcapped peaks were just jutting out of nowhere with the dirt road leading straight up to it. If you have followed my stream, you will recognize this theme often when I am around mountains, something about mountains and roads just seems irresistible to me. Often these are such fantastic and easy shots that result in brilliant scenery.

Fyero photobombed me today; but meh, who am I to argue?

Everything is wrong with this photo, the light isn't balanced, it's overexposed, it's not weighted properly, there's a flare smackdab in the centre and yet I don't care. It's adorable and I think it's a sweet shot.

It's a good Sunday shot, if you ask me. Spontanious and relaxed. So thank you Fyero for sticking your nose in the frame!

Hope everyone has had a good day.

Kolkata... Rustically dilapidated, where walking on the street is safer than walking on the pavement. Red lights are merely a suggestion. Crossing the street seems to be a life threatening national sport. Seat belts - what seat belts? For heaven sakes avoid the blue buses because they won't avoid you. Always look both ways before crossing the train tracks. Mind the cows, dogs and cats. Feel free to bathe in the street - everyone does and you won't be noticed. I will never complain about traffic again. The car horn is a national musical instrument which everyone seems to have perfected because they're playing it all day long. Every street is a different market selling all kinds of goods and wares. Be prepared for selfies several times daily - not taken by you, but taken by others who want a selfie with you. But, if this is all that you see in Kolkata then you truly haven't experienced the city. People always say look beyond the negative - I don't consider this a negative. Rather in this case I would say look into all of these things and you will see friendly, hospitable people who are content, with a sparkle in their eyes and smiles on their faces. Walk down any street, say good morning to someone and they smile back at you and wish you a good morning too. It's no wonder that Kolkata is called "The City of Joy!" All of this makes Kolkata a street-photographers paradise where photos are happening every second. I stayed for 9 days, but it could have been 90 days and it still wouldn't have been enough. It was a life changing experience that I shall never be able to forget and will always cherish. Until next time...

Judaeo-Christianity is not uncaring about whales and organic farming. It merely regards them as not the Problem. Judaeo-Christianity regards humanity and its City as the Problem at the center of the World. It has addressed this Problem with sustained intensity for some 4,000 years in a discourse which is all but erotically entwined with things, and with images of things, during the whole time. The discourse has been on the whole tougher and more disciplined than the average romantic has been able to detect. Jews and Christians have tended not to talk so much about the meaning of things in themselves, but rather to presume that their meaning is contained simply in their creaturely existence, to revere that existence, and then to bless their Creator for it. “Blessed be the Lord God, King of the universe, for the fruit of the vine. Blessed be he.”

-Aidan Kavanagh, On Liturgical Theology
