Good news that Earl is more of shore and not as strong as originally expected

On the 7.2 Earthquake in NZ, seems quite a bit of Damage in Christchurch, but good thing was the timing at 4:30 in the morning most people where at home so hopefully not to many injuries

Hope all my family and friends back home in NZ are oK

This posting is dedicated to all the WWII Navy sailors and merchant mariners that were assigned to convoy duty, especially in the Atlantic Theater. My Dad, Richard A. Lloyd, was stationed on a Patrol Gunboat (PG-67, USS Reddy) escorting convoys on the Havana, Cuba to Boston run. The cargo ships they were protecting were bringing resources and supplies from South America to the USA in support of the war effort.

This image is amazing on several levels: The artistic style, the gender stereotypes, the fact that “convoy duty” was not as glamorous as other assignments, the young enlisted guys getting over on the Sergeant, etc. I’ve also posted the back of the card to show where it originated. I found this in one of my Mom’s scrapbooks.

God bless all our veterans - thank you all for your amazing service!

the American Merchant Mariners' Memorial, just south of Pier A in Battery Park.

apparently this sculpture is based on a real-life historical event - after a German U-boat attacked a merchant marine vessel in WWII, they then proceeded to photograph their victims on the sinking ship.

American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial, next to Pier A. (Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal is across the water in the distant).

Commissioned by the American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial, Inc., this memorial was conceived in 1976. In 1988, after an extensive competition, the artist Marisol Escobar (b. 1930), known as Marisol, was chosen to develop her design. Situated off-shore from the north end of Battery Park and just south of Pier A, the monument stands on a rebuilt stone breakwater in the harbor. The bronze figural group and boat are based on an actual historical event; during World War II, a Nazi U-boat attacked a merchant marine vessel, and while the mariners clung to their sinking vessel, the Germans photographed their victims. Marisol developed a series of studio sketches from this photograph, then fashioned a clay maquette as her winning design proposal for the monument. The work was dedicated on October 8, 1991. -nycgovparks.org

The best part of being a Merchant Mariner is the off time to do the shit you love with the people you love.

Here I'm riding dune buggies in Ica Peru with my girlfriend.

"The World War II East Coast Memorial is located in Battery Park, New York City. This memorial commemorates those soldiers, sailors, Marines, coast guardsmen, merchant mariners and airmen who met their deaths in the service of their country in the western waters of the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. Its axis is oriented on the Statue of Liberty. On each side of the axis are four gray granite pylons upon which are inscribed the name, rank, organization and state of each of the 4,611 missing in the waters of the Atlantic."

I know the titles a little jargony but if you are in the business then it's not Chinese to you.

Those big black cylinders with the tires chained all around them are called yokohamas. Huge ships use them as fenders when another ship comes alongside them.

Inspiration: Thinking about Remembrance Day

Result: Merchant Mariners who were literally the life line to Europe (Kitty style)

Materials: Pentel 0.3 HB, Micron 005, 02 pens in a Moleskine plain journal

Location: At home

Note: Casualty rates for the Merchant Marines was the highest of all the services during WWII ~ 1 in 10 Canadian sailors lost their lives delivering desperately needed supplies from North America. The American Liberty ship crews faired slightly better with 1 in 26 deaths, but the fact remains that without these fearless seamen braving the roaming Wolf packs of U-2 boats in the North Atlantic, there would have been no fuel, food or weapons reaching the Allies in Europe....period.
