Trying some VSCO films with a photo I took in 2010 when I was in New York.

Court martialled in Richmond Barracks, imprisoned in Kilmainham Gaol and subsequently in Mountjoy, Portland, Lewes and Pentonville before the general amnesty of 1917.
A precious family heirloom is a Claddagh ring he made in one of the prisons, out of old sixpence pieces. Some of the coins’ markings are visible on the inside of the band.
He is pictured in the Mansion House photo of returned internees (4th from right, back row).
Attended school in North Brunswick St CBS and started working in the Guinness Brewery in 1905 first in the Cooperage and from 1906 in the Chemists Lab.
Joined the Irish Volunteers on the night it was formed in Nov 1913.
Married Veronica Anderson on 23 Aug 1915.
A member of 1st D Company, he fought at the Mendicity Institution under Sean Heuston.
He is mentioned in a number of reports of the Rising, including Desmond Ryan’s “The Rising, the complete story of Easter Week” (Chapter x page 159, footnote 4). His own account was published in the Capuchin Annual 1966.
Discharged from the Guinness Brewery on 25 April 1916 “in connection with the Sinn Fein rebellion” but re-instated March 1922 (Engs Dept) where he worked till retirement in 1955.
His wife was expecting their first child (a boy, Pearse) when the Rising occurred. They went on to have five more children, Maureen, Des, Kevin, Vera (my mother) and Sean.
He and his wife ran a shop, first at 158 North King Street and subsequently in Innisfallen Parade. The family lived over the Innisfallen Parade shop before moving to Mannix Road in
1935.
While he took no active part in fighting during either the War of Independence or the Civil War, his shop in North King Street was use as a ‘propaganda post office’ and meeting place. He was involved in working on despatches and handing them out as well as with meetings and elections.
Family folklore tells of the Black and Tans coming into the shop in North King Street, looking for Jimmy Brennan, unaware that it was he they spoke to. He told them that Jimmy was out on a delivery and would be back in a half hour. When they left, he gave his gun to his wife to dispose of and scarpered. He was on the run for some months and wasn’t too pleased on his return to discover that his wife had dumped the gun in the Liffey!
On this or another occasion he is said to have dressed up as a priest (complete with the traditional black biretta) to avoid detection. He stored costumes in his home for plays put on by a local drama club he was involved in (hence the priest’s costume), and following another raid, was thought to be a master of disguise when these costumes were discovered! Fact or just family folklore? Who knows?
He was one of the founders of the Kilmainham Gaol Restoration Society and was its secretary (and a guide there) for many years. What he thought was his farewell letter to his wife written before his court martial in 1916, is displayed in the gaol.
He was founding member and secretary of the Old IRA Literary and Debating Society and chairman of the Sean Heuston Memorial committee.
He and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1965.

Jorge Mendes focuses, for this presentation, on the idea of brand name labeling. The same product is, often, offered in different packaging. Many consumers want to pay more for the same or for a very similar product, just because it has the right label on it. Mendes’s Bomma also seems to have been infected with this tendency. While other brands are available, she sticks to the label (brand) she knows and loves. Because Mendes loves his Bomma, he doesn’t judge her or the things she collects. He wants us to try and to understand her (and ours) impulses.
While there is a certain comfort in staying with what we know, real excitement always comes when one has the courage to venture into the unknown. Let’s not forget that it was those early explorers that took a chance on a new artist, that enabled Bomma’s favourite brand to develop into the worldwide significant label it’s today. It’s also the early adventures, that have profited the most from the development spurred by their early support.
Having just installed a new Internet connection for her, Mendes is encouraging her (and us), to look a bit further. While she might stick to her favourite label, at least now she has a chance to view the world beyond her own back yard. Even at her advancing age she’s showing a healthy curiosity, searching out what’s new and interesting. Should she find something new that catches her fancy, she will need a new kast. Maybe there is a lesson here for our younger folks. With this edition, Mendes celebrates his Bomma’s connoisseurship achievements and her potential to do it again.
