Campiglia marittima, that is of the Maremma (in Latin Maritima), a medieval town considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, was already inhabited in the Etruscan and Roman times due to the wealth of minerals in the area. The first official document mentioning Campiglia dates back to 1004.

It is today considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.

The origin of the Pétrusse Casemates goes back to 1644, when the Spaniards reinforced the medieval fortifications and built large bastions.

After the 1867 Treaty of London the fortress to be dismantled and most of the entrances were closed. After the demolition, about 17 km of the casemates remained.

In 1933, the first visitors - initially with torches - were able to descend. In 1994 the fortifications of the city of Luxembourg and its old quarters were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

You can buy tickets to tour several sections. This is looking out one of the openings onto the Grund Lower town, once protected by the medieval fortress.

The goal of this model was to grant the viewer a look into a narrow and crooked medieval alleyway.

The main challenge of this built was the underlying layout of the houses, because non of the houses stands parallel or vertical to the next one.

Another focus was oin building each house unique in terms of color palette, woodwork and roof design, but keep them consistent stylewise.

Raw build time was 400+ hours over about three and a half months. I had to crunch a little to get this MOC done for Bricking Bavaria 2022 in mid November.

The glorious medieval city of St. Emilion in Bordeaux is absolutely stunning. Set in the hills this Roman city is a joy to behold. It's a photographers delight. The joy of France is never better on display and in a region where the wines and food are beyond a treat.

.................. ..

The first medieval documentary date of the castle of Ucero (Soria) is from 1157, a privilege of Alfonso VII to the town of Sotos de Suso, which claims to be between Oxoma and Ucero.

There has been news of the castle since the 13th century.

It has at least unusual architecture, which will certainly not leave us indifferent.

Ghent is such an awesome city, I even prefer it to Bruges. Many tourists go to Bruges, and leave Ghent to their side, such a mistake. If you want to visit Belgium, don't forget Ghent.

I’ve heard this place on Rozenhoedkaai is the most photographed place in Brugge (Bruges), Belgium. I believe that is true, since I’ve seen many shots of it right here on Flickr. Because of that, I wanted to make it look different. It took me some time to arrive to this version. Hope you will like it.

In medieval times the village of Lavenham in Suffolk was one of the richest in England. It thrived on the wool trade in the 15th and 16th centuries when local merchants became very wealthy.

One the ways they could show their wealth was in the building of houses which .has resulted in the village having many half timbered properties that have stood the test of time over many centuries. There are over 200 grade 1 and grade 2 listed structures in the village today.

This house, known as Cordwainers, dates from circa 15th century and is located in the High Street. It is a timber frame and plastered building with grade 2 listed protection. In the past it was the One Bell Inn but is now a private house. I particularly like the different shapes and sizes of the timber beams, the colour of the plasterwork and the blocked up doorway on the right. A magnificent property!

An arrow street of the medieval town

Castelnuovo Val di Cecina is a small village of the Metalliferous Hills, located on the furthest reaches of the Maremma open to the Tyrrhenian Sea and the island of Elba. The origins are uncertain, but certainly go back at the age Lombard (VII sec.), When this people drew up new avenues for research of mineral building a series of fortresses sighting and defense along the path that wound from Volterra Massa Marittima.

There are several beautifully preserved medieval streets and houses in the centre of the town of Laval. Laval is a town in western France, about 300 km southwest of Paris.

The medieval town square just visible at the end of this little street can be seen here. In that image, the street here disappears between the two buildings on the left.
