Brady is happy because he has some new medicine to help him stop itching. The vet said he has a pollen allergy and she gave him some Prednisone, an antibiotic (his itchy spots were infected), a medicated spray, medicated shampoo, and a list of over-the-counter antihistamines. We're supposed to rinse him off before going to bed and give him a bath 3x a week with the medicated shampoo. Last night we finally slept through the night without him waking us up licking himself. YAY! He's still a little itchy this morning but I think he's feeling better.

Hibiscus

Hibiscus (/hɨˈbɪskəs/ or /haɪˈbɪskəs/) is a genus of flowering plants in the mallow family, Malvaceae. It is quite large, containing several hundred species that are native to warm-temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. Member species are often noted for their showy flowers and are commonly known simply as hibiscus, or less widely known as rose mallow. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, as well as woody shrubs and small trees. The generic name is derived from the Greek word ἱβίσκος (hibískos), which was the name Pedanius Dioscorides (ca. 40–90) gave to Althaea officinalis.

Description:

The leaves are alternate, ovate to lanceolate, often with a toothed or lobed margin. The flowers are large, conspicuous, trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals, color from white to pink, red, orange, purple or yellow, and from 4–18 cm broad. Flower color in certain species, such as H. mutabilis and H. tiliaceus, changes with age.[5] The fruit is a dry five-lobed capsule, containing several seeds in each lobe, which are released when the capsule dehisces (splits open) at maturity. It is of red and white colours. It is an example of complete flowers.

Uses:

Symbolism and culture

Hibiscus species represent nations: Hibiscus syriacus is the national flower of South Korea, and Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is the national flower of Malaysia. The hibiscus is the national flower of Haiti. The red hibiscus is the flower of the Hindu goddess Kali, and appears frequently in depictions of her in the art of Bengal, India, often with the goddess and the flower merging in form. The hibiscus is used as an offering to goddess Kali and Lord Ganesha in Hindu worship.

In the Philippines, the gumamela (local name for hibiscus) is used by children as part of a bubble-making pastime. The flowers and leaves are crushed until the sticky juices come out. Hollow papaya stalks are then dipped into this and used as straws for blowing bubbles.

The hibiscus flower is traditionally worn by Tahitian and Hawaiian girls. If the flower is worn behind the left ear, the woman is married or in a relationship. If the flower is worn on the right, she is single or openly available for a relationship. The hibiscus is Hawaii's state flower.

Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie named her first novel Purple Hibiscus after the delicate flower.

The bark of the hibiscus contains strong bast fibres that can be obtained by letting the stripped bark set in the sea to let the organic material rot away.

Landscaping

Many species are grown for their showy flowers or used as landscape shrubs, and are used to attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.

Paper

One species of Hibiscus, known as kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus), is extensively used in paper-making.

Beverage

Main article: Hibiscus tea

The tea made of hibiscus flowers is known by many names in many countries around the world and is served both hot and cold. The beverage is well known for its color, tanginess and flavor.

It is known as bissap in West Africa, agua de jamaica in Mexico and Honduras (the flower being flor de jamaica) and gudhal (गुड़हल) in India. Some refer to it as roselle, a common name for the hibiscus flower. In Jamaica, Trinidad and many other islands in the Caribbean, the drink is known as sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa; not to be confused with Rumex acetosa, a species sharing the common name sorrel). In Ghana, the drink is known as soobolo in one of the local languages.

Roselle is typically boiled in an enamel-coated large stock pot as most West Indians believe the metal from aluminum, steel or copper pots will destroy the natural minerals and vitamins.[citation needed]

In Cambodia, a cold beverage can be prepared by first steeping the petals in hot water until the colors are leached from the petals, then adding lime juice (which turns the beverage from dark brown/red to a bright red), sweeteners (sugar/honey) and finally cold water/ice cubes.

In Egypt,[citation needed] Sudan and the Arab world, hibiscus tea is known as karkadé (كركديه), and is served as both a hot and a cold drink.

Food

Dried hibiscus is edible, and it is often a delicacy in Mexico. It can also be candied and used as a garnish.

The roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is used as a vegetable. The species Hibiscus suratensis Linn synonymous to Hibiscus aculeatus G. Don is noted in Visayas Philippines being a souring ingredient for almost all local vegetables and menus. Known as Labog in the Visayan area, (or Labuag/Sapinit in Tagalog), the species is a very good ingredient in cooking native chicken soup. Certain species of hibiscus are also beginning to be used more widely as a natural source of food coloring (E163),[citation needed] and replacement of Red #3 / E127.

Hibiscus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidopteran species, including Chionodes hibiscella, Hypercompe hambletoni, the nutmeg moth, and the turnip moth.

Health benefits

The tea is popular as a natural diuretic; it contains vitamin C and minerals, and is used traditionally as a mild medicine.

A 2008 USDA study shows consuming hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure in a group of prehypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults. Three cups of tea daily resulted in an average drop of 8.1 mmHg in their systolic blood pressure, compared to a 1.3 mmHg drop in the volunteers who drank the placebo beverage. Study participants with higher blood pressure readings (129 or above) had a greater response to hibiscus tea: their systolic blood pressure went down by 13.2 mmHg. These data support the idea that drinking hibiscus tea in an amount readily incorporated into the diet may play a role in controlling blood pressure, although more research is required.

Studies have demonstrated the anti-hypertensive effects of H. sabdariffa in both humans and animals. It has been proposed that the antihypertensive effects of H. sabdariffa is due to its angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibiting activity. In a randomized, controlled clinical trial involving 39 patients with mild to moderate hypertension, Captopril was compared to an extract of H. sabdariffa for antihypertensive effects. Subjects taking an extract of H.sabdariffa, consumed daily before breakfast for four weeks, found reduction in blood pressure similar to Captopril. Another randomized, placebo clinical trial involving 54 study participants with moderate hypertension demonstrated a reduction in both systolic and diastolic blood pressure. However upon discontinuation of treatment, both systolic and diastolic blood pressures were subsequently elevated.

Hibiscus rosa-sinensis has a number of medical uses in Chinese herbology. Lokapure s.g.et al. their research indicates some potential in cosmetic skin care; for example, an extract from the flowers of Hibiscus rosa- sinensis has been shown to function as an anti-solar agent by absorbing ultraviolet radiation.

In the Indian traditional system of medicine, Ayurveda, hibiscus, especially white hibiscus and red hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), is considered to have medicinal properties. The roots are used to make various concoctions believed to cure ailments such as cough, hair loss or hair greying. As a hair treatment, the flowers are boiled in oil along with other spices to make a medicated hair oil. The leaves and flowers are ground into a fine paste with a little water, and the resulting lathery paste is used as a shampoo plus conditioner.

Hibiscus tea also contains bioflavonoids, which are believed to help prevent an increase in LDL cholesterol, which can increase the buildup of plaque in the arteries.

A previous animal study demonstrated the effects of H.sabdariffa extract on atherosclerosis in rabbits. Notably, a reduction in triglyceride, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein was observed in rabbits consuming a high cholesterol diet (HCD) in addition to H.sabdariffa extract compared to rabbits only fed HCD, suggesting a beneficial effect.[16] Furthermore, the H. sabdariffa seed is abundant in phytosterol and tocopherol, plant forms of cholesterol that have antioxidant and LDL cholesterol lowering effects.

Precautions and Contraindications:

Pregnancy and Lactation

While the mechanism is not well understood, previous animal studies have demonstrated both an inhibitory effect of H. sabdariffa on muscle tone and the anti-fertility effects of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, respectively. The extract of H. sabdariffa has been shown to stimulate contraction of the rat bladder and uterus; the H.rosa-sinensis extract has exhibited contraceptive effects in the form of estrogen activity in rats. These findings have not been observed in humans. The Hibiscus rosa-sinensis is also thought to have emmenagogue effects which can stimulate menstruation and, in some women, cause an abortion. Due to the documented adverse effects in animal studies and the reported pharmacological properties, the H. sabdariffa and H.rosa-sinensis are not recommended for use during pregnancy. Additionally, they are not recommended while breastfeeding due to the lack of reliable information on its safety and use.

Contraindications

No contraindications have been identified.

Adverse Effects

Drug Interactions

It is postulated that H. sabdariffa interacts with diclofenac, chloroquine and acetaminophen by altering the pharmacokinetics. In healthy human volunteers, the H. sabdariffa extract was found to reduce the excretion of diclofenac upon co-administration. Additionally, co-administration of Karkade (H. sabdariffa), a common Sudanese beverage, was found to reduce chloroquine bioavailability. However, no statistically significant changes were observed in the pharmacokinetics of acetaminophen when administered with the Zobo (H.sabdariffa) drink. Further studies are needed to demonstrate clinical significance.

Species:

In temperate zones, probably the most commonly grown ornamental species is Hibiscus syriacus, the common garden hibiscus, also known in some areas as the "Rose of Althea" or "Rose of Sharon" (but not to be confused with the unrelated Hypericum calycinum, also called "Rose of Sharon"). In tropical and subtropical areas, the Chinese hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis), with its many showy hybrids, is the most popular hibiscus.

#Navarakizhi is a perspiration - triggering body scrub. What makes this treatment different is the use of medicated #herbalrice.

The rice is first soaked in natural herbs and oils. The blend is cooked to steam, and the resulting fragrant mixture is then contained in puffy tea bags.

The procedure in Navarakizhi is a two-step process:

specially-applied oil is first slathered all over the body, after which the tea bags are used to 'massage' the body, with extra focus in areas where #marma (nerve points) reside.

Navarakizhi is extremely effective against #rheumatism, joint and muscle pains, back pains, high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, #menstruation problems, infertility and nervous weaknesses. It could also help to get relieve from certain #skin problems.

Flerynka (Flercia) moved out to Heaven...

A couple of months ago, she had a nasty infection, a cyst (don't know how that happened) and had to be operated. The problem was, the surgery was more complicated than expected, and it weakened her heart seriously. We tried to medicate her for some time, and she seemed better, then worse, and then her heart just went weaker and weaker and one day it just stopped beating...

She was 1 year and 4 months old.

Flercia was a wonderful girl. Don't know if you remember, but at first she was The Wrong Hamster - we went to a pet shop, fell in love with a super cute, super calm grey syrian girl. But then all of them woke up and spilled out of their tiny house and we got confused... cos a second grey hammie appeared, very similar to the one we'd been observing. Finally the shop assisant came and we showed her the hamster we wanted. At home it turned out we picked the Wrong One, not the one we fell in love with.

But it's OK, very soon we fell in love with Flercia. With time, she turned into Florcia's (Florentynka) almost-twin sister. She was very smart, and very calm, and never really made any trouble. A bit grumpy, but not excessively. She made the most wonderful, well-behaved and sweet vet patient EVER. She was so sweet and brave when being ill... all hammies should be like that. She hated hamsters, though. Oh, and she looked like a cute potato.

And then, one day in August, she died... and resurrected. No, really. She went to heaven for a few seconds, hated the fact it was full of hamsters, and came back. You can read all about it here:

www.flickr.com/photos/chmurka/9933850384

I do miss her. I loved looking at her., watching her do things. It's so much emptier without her...

She was the Wrong Hamster who Passed Away and Resurrected and was The Best Potato Girl Hammie Ever.

Play in Peace with Florcia and the rest... xxx

PS. I'm left with MiuMiu, Mufinek and Greta.

Pre-exam shoot from earlier this year, loosely based on the work of Damien Hirst and the idea that self medicating can be a cry for help.

visual representation of what its like to dj medicated. I hurt my wrist (again) an am on (LEGAL) painkillers :(

Less than a month ago it was announced by the VicPD, for all within earshot, that I was disgusting, and today that opinion was reinforced, by a jury of my peers.

There appears to be a theme here – disgusting, or rather, I am disgusting.

I'd already got to experience the snubbing from VicPD officers today while I photographed Cops for Cancer this morning. Amid a sea of friendly and joyous police officers were a couple cops who had been named in active OPCC complaints over their harassment of me and I guess they felt it best to pretend that I don't exist; just look right through me or avert their glace. Whatever, but seriously, what the...?

It was my second time out today, shooting photography for a youth group I volunteer with. I was in serious pain. It seems my left knee has decided to fall apart during my last term at university. I didn't need that, or the elevated levels of pain.

I've been lying to my doctors lately. I didn't want to tell them how bad my knee is getting because I'm sick of surgery. I've had around 20 so far, on my knees alone. Total surgeries are somewhere nearing 30.

So my left knee was killing me with so much pain I could barely walk.

I tried to estimate the general wind direction, to avoid poisoning the crowd with my evil medication; I sought out a place to medicate that would not irritate. I gotta tell you how much fun it is to walk in pain, on a broken knee, to look for a place to smoke my weed.

I worked my way south to the perimeter of the grounds and found the nearest object I could sit on. I was in extreme pain and needed to get the weight off my knees, NOW.

When I sat down the pain was still too much and all I could do was bend over into a semi fetal position, trying to muster some strength, trying not to give in to the pain that wanted to force the tears men are not supposed to allow.

Finally I was able to get my shit together enough to pull out a joint and spark it up. I don't know what the winds were doing but it was quickly apparent that my weed was tainting the jury pool to my right, a group of aging yuppie-ish and kinda financially secure appearing sorta folk who were excellent at non-verbally relaying their disgust with me. Over 5 meters away from me, in the open car-exhaust filled air, and somehow my medication was an affront to the jury’s finer sensibilities.

Exaggerated rolled eyes, evil looks, and assorted harrumphs flowed from the jury like a tsunami of disapproval.

I almost drown.

I couldn't take their flood of disapproval anymore, and my pain medication was far from kicking in, but the pain of being a pain in the ass to mankind forced me to move further away from people, to where I don't know where I was welcome.

I was joking with a CTV guy in the mobile broadcasting unit parked in the street. He'd walked past earlier and offered me a non-judgemental nod when he smelled my herb, and so I thought it a friendly area for refuge.

We had no sooner joked about borrowing the TV station’s broadcast unit to hotbox in, so that I could avoid the public's disapproval, when from behind I could hear the voice of protest. In spite of me moving out off the property next to the road, apparently I still wasn't far enough away for the likes of the jury.

An angry man, I assume the jury foreman (Imperial Wizard), approached me and began his exasperated lecture. I told him I appreciated his concerns but that I prefer to discuss them without the blanket of disapproving judgment.

While being negative, aggressive, judgmental, and accusatory the jury foreman proceeded to insist that he was not being negative, aggressive, judgmental, and accusatory.

He told me that he thought that it was disgusting; that I was smoking marijuana beside a cancer charity event.

I assumed he believed marijuana to be a cause of cancer - and NOT a medication used by those suffering from cancer.

I wasn't sure if he meant the rest of the jury, or the entire gathering at the cops for cancer event, but he told me that "all of the people over there" were disgusted with me, that they found me disgusting. He repeated it as though once was not enough for telling me that I'm disgusting.

Maybe if I told him that the VicPD had already told me I was disgusting, that maybe he might ease up a little, or maybe that would've added fuel to his fire of contempt.

My pleas to leave me alone failed until I shouted loudly and he finally walked away, littering the path behind his retreat with tidbits of adjectives - "asshole", "disgusting", maybe "loser", I'm not sure. He spoke softly to avoid the crowd’s attention while he offered additional expressions of displeasure.

When I echoed his sentiments he returned with a vengeance, like a hockey player about to flatten me against the boards.

I stood my ground and responded in kind, shouting loudly for him to leave me alone until he backed down and returned to the shelter of his disgusted peers in the jury.

It's unsettling, it's depressing - getting shit from some asshole while I'm in extreme pain, trying to be patient with the rudely impatient. Why were they so disgusted? Why couldn't they approach me like a human being with their concerns, instead of with their minds made up?

...so I looked for some cops to report this to, fearing the angry jury foreman may strike again. I found some cop trainees, but no police. I reported the incident to them, but they said I'd need to find a real cop to report it to. Thanks for the help, dudes.

Screw it. No-one gives a shit. I can't be trying to hunt down cops on my bad knees. Why couldn't the faux-cops have gone to find a real cop for me? What were they doing there? I can't believe that if a rich white disabled woman came up to them and reported that she was being harassed regarding her disability by a group of aggressive people that she'd be told to go look for a real cop, on her disabled knees. I was told to avoid the turf that the anti-marijuana bullies now control. WTF? The restrictions are placed upon me? What’d I do?

What I did was decide to kick the living shit out of the guy if he even made a peep at me or gave me the wrong look. He never looked me in the eye again. I finished shooting until I was sure that I had the shots and video I needed. I split.

Still shook up, I needed to chill, so I thought I'd shoot some street photography. I hung out on the corner of Douglas and Yates and tried to work some magic with the camera. Little was happening, but I noticed that Ted Smith was canvassing for Sensible BC. I thought it would be cool to get some shots of the Hempology 101 man panning for legalization.

I took some shots from afar but then thought I'd drop over to his side of the street, bury the hatchet, and sign the Sensible BC petition. Ted had other plans. I guess he decided to hold some sort of grudge. He had turned his back on me over the UVic reefer madness debacle, when the courts branded me impaired until proven sober. Gosh, I love this town.

Ted pretended I wasn't there. I was about 3 feet away from him, sitting on my flashy chrome chopper, calling his name - but he turned aside, turned his back on me in some sort of display of self-righteousness.

I was not allowed to sign.

Are disgusting people not permitted to sign the Sensible BC petition?

Poor Shmuley, he has this horrible allergy that nothing will help. He is on a prescription medication Atopica, has used Sebozole medicated shampoo, Miracle Mist spray-on treatment with tea tree oil, Soother topical spray, and Booster dietary supplements. I don't even think the Atopica is working as well as it used to (he's been on it for years.) I feel so bad for him. He's 11 years old now and I just hate to see him go through this, always scratching. If anyone has ever seen anything like this (Atopic dermatitis)and knows something that works, please let me know. Thanks.

ANIMALS KILLED AND THROWN ON BONFIRE ON

YORKSHIRE WATER GROUSE SHOOTING MOOR

Sheffield, UK – Wildlife has been killed and incinerated on a bonfire on moorland leased for grouse shooting by Yorkshire Water.

Wild animals have been killed and incinerated on a bonfire on a South Yorkshire moor leased for grouse shooting by Yorkshire Water. Ban Bloodsports on Yorkshire’s Moors (BBYM) made the grim discovery of bird and mammal skeletons torched alongside liquor bottles and shotgun cartridges on Range Moor, near Langsett Reservoir.

Native wildlife is relentlessly eradicated by gamekeepers on Yorkshire Water’s moorland to increase red grouse numbers for shooting parties. Jaw-like fenn traps—in which stoats and weasels can take up to two minutes to die—were found set on the moor, some still containing the decomposing remains of captured animals. Snares targeting foxes and the area’s threatened population of mountain hares were crudely installed on an exposed hillside. Sensitive peatland habitat has also been burnt, a practice which pollutes catchment water and leaves vulnerable breeding birds—including hen harrier, merlin and dunlin—no longer able to make the damaged moorland their home.

BBYM has investigated six randomly-chosen moors leased out by Yorkshire Water for grouse shooting, uncovering systematic wildlife persecution and environmental degradation on each. This has resulted in rising pressure for the utility company to end grouse shooting on its land.

Luke Steele, Spokesperson for Ban Bloodsports on Yorkshire’s Moors, says:

“Wildlife persecution uncovered on Range Moor, where animals are being caught in inhumane traps and snares before their bodies are callously tossed into a bonfire, is clearly inexcusable. With this being the sixth Yorkshire Water moor leased for grouse shooting where extermination of wildlife and environmental degradation has been documented, it is clear there is an ecological scandal ongoing and tough action from the utility business must be taken.

“If Yorkshire Water wants to be recognised as taking its environmental responsibilities seriously, then ending its grouse shooting leases is the only course of action that will suffice. By removing the negative impact allowing the practice has on wildlife, habitat and the region’s reputation, Yorkshire Water will truly become the environmental champion it espouses to be.”

Every local authority in the county, including nearby Sheffield Council, has ended the bloodsport on their uplands estates, having once allowed it, and Yorkshire Water is now being urged to follow their example. Over 16,000 people have signed a petition to Yorkshire Water’s CEO Richard Flint, demanding the utility company brings its grouse shooting leases to an end.
