OSCE examinations are compulsory for Medical students and specialist trainees. The student is led through a clinical scenario and then assessed on examination, history taking, investigation, diagnosis and management. Some students are able to practice OSCEs with a teacher acting as the patient, however not all candidates have equal/sufficient access to teachers as such a resource. This often leads to examination candidates not being prepared for the OSCE exam format, performing poorly compared with written paper examinations.

This book covers an approach to passing the OSCE as well as 60 practice questions. Each case will have a sample marking scheme. After the marking scheme there will be a discussion and key points/pitfalls section.

We gave $5000 to Children’s Hope in Action in Hoi An. CHIA is a grass roots NGO providing education, disability and medical services to disadvantaged children in the wider Quang Nam province where many families are barely surviving on $1-$2 a day. 30 teenagers are boarded there so they can get an education. Children with cerebral palsy, congenital limb deformation, and club feet are among those given help. They provided a bicycle for a student who couldn’t get to school otherwise. Several volunteers, including Australians and Americans, work there.

In Hue, we visited the public hospital where we send hand and heart surgery teams every year. Hue Central Hospital is one of the 3 biggest super hospitals in Vietnam, founded 120 years ago. It has 2400 beds. We have been sending hand surgery teams since 1997. Each visit they do 20 – 40 operations and teach skills for a week. The physios and nurses also teach their skills. Last year 60 surgeons from throughout Vietnam came to the course. The head of Hand Surgery, Dr. Nhat, and the head of the hospital’s International Cooperation Dept., Mr. Son, took us to see operating theatres and some patients and their emergency department. They send medical students overseas to work and also accept foreign students to work with them.
