2015 Challenge, Week 14: NUMBERS – MEASUREMENT. In photography, measuring light is key. For a colorblind person (like myself), properly measuring the color of the light is as essential as the intensity in my workflow. The two objects in the background are my 'go-to' tools for color management.

Network Rail may have the 125 mph "New Measurement Train" to inspect the track,but this is far more fun.Volunteers at Eardington station,on the Severn Valley Railway,assemble the cycle (possibly an Armstrong ?) used to travel the line.

Crawling through the fine misty rain, Network Rail no. 43013 trails behind 43062 & 5 of the 6 New Measurement Train coaches, passing a damp Longbridge whilst working 1Z20 from Reading Triangle Sidings to Derby RTC (via London Paddington, Bristol Parkway & Swansea).
Network Rail New Measurement Train (NMT). The NMT is a specialised train which assess the condition of track so that engineers can determine where to work. It is a specially converted High Speed Train, consisting of two Class 43 power cars (from a pool comprising vehicles 43013, 43014 and 43062) and a rake of Mark 3 coaches. It can check the condition of most main lines and some secondary routes in the UK over a 13 week rolling cycle.
The train measures the contact between rails, wheels and the overhead electric supply line. Lasers and other instruments are used to make other measurements of the track geometry and other features such as overhead line height and stagger, and the track gauge, twist and cant. The train captures video footage from the front and rear power cars, and video of the pantograph and wheel interfaces.
Launched in 2003, and has been nicknamed "The Flying Banana" for obvious reasons. It's formation is a power car, messing car, development systems vehicle, track recording systems vehicle, meeting coach with conference area, messing car, and power car. The track recording systems vehicle has banks of screens allowing the team of 3 operators to view a range of system outputs, including track faults, train location, and radio signal strength. This coloured part of this image shows the first-ever measurement by a spacecraft of how Mercury radiates in mid-infrared light. It was measured by the MERTIS instrument on the ESA/JAXA BepiColombo mission on 1 December 2024, as the spacecraft flew past the planet for the fifth time.
MERTIS, short for Mercury Radiometer and Thermal Infrared Spectrometer, will be a key tool for BepiColombo to uncover what Mercury's surface is made of. The colours in this image indicate how much Mercury's surface radiates with a wavelength of 8.45 micrometres. This radiance depends on what minerals the cratered surface is made of, the surface roughness and the temperature. The regularly appearing gaps on the map are due to the calibration cycle on the instrument.
The greyscale background image shows the surface of Mercury as observed by NASA’s Messenger mission. You can use the slider to directly compare MERTIS's infrared measurements to Messenger's visible light observations.
MERTIS's view during this flyby covers part of the largest impact crater on Mercury, called the Caloris Basin. The zoom panel shows a close-up of the area around the Bashō impact crater. Messenger's visible light images show that Bashō impact crater exhibits both very dark and very bright material. The MERTIS flyby observations reveal that the crater also stands out in infrared light.
The lower right shows the flyby coverage projected on the Mercury globe. The flyby MERTIS data shown in grey is overlaid on the global mosaic of a topography map based on Messenger data.

This was sort of a 4-purpose test. They were checking the fit of this size MACES on me, I was being checked out in the MACES for the long test I'll be participating in within the next month or so, another group was taking anthropometric measurements of me and the suit at various levels of dress and inflation, and yet another group was evaluating placement and accessibility of consoles and hand controllers. Here I'm partially inflated and they're doing standing measurements on me.

It can check the condition of most main lines and some secondary routes in Great Britain over a 13 week rolling cycle. The trains are permitted to travel across any part of the network where HST are permitted as well as HS1.
The NMT dodges wires and keeps one step ahead of the inclement weather, as it heads north east towards Derby RTC.
What's the point of walking when you can slide? And at any rate, walking is overrated; as is staying upright. So it was a stooped and scissored type action, skate, back to the car, over sodden and uneven ground, with an occasional arm raising, bringing to mind someone ill at ease on a tightrope. I always find that a rousing end to any photo-shoot, is preferable.
