Who decided that the female body, and being a woman, is shameful? And why the have we let it be that way for so long? We need to normalise being a woman and what it means. We need to talk about the struggles women go through. We need to talk about womanhood and its effect on our lives and identity. We need to talk about it. So lets talk. Lady business is a show where we talk about very "private" things a public space. We are sick of being told what not to say so now we are saying it. We welcome you to be a part of the conversation.
She's a selkie, one of the mythological beings of Føroyar; a seal woman.
The seal people are the spirits of humans who have suicided by drowning. From time to time they'd come ashore at Mikladalur, shed their skins and back in human form they'd party, party, party. At least until dawn.
Ages before the #MeToo movement some creep stole Kópakonan's skin and held her captive. The story goes on and on, like a Nordic saga. I can't say that it has a happy ending. Most parables don't and I guess you'd call this a parable, maybe part animism, part Christianity in my mind. Read up on it.
Although this bronze sculpture of Kópakonan looks incredibly human she is more than twice life-sized. You just don't notice the scale in such a landscape. And she belongs here on this wild shore. She would be diminished and demeaned in a township or museum.
This post has raised extraordinary problems. The angles and the backgrounds are all intriguing. But she comes from the sea. The steep shores of Kunoy are a spectacular backdrop except they are land. The light is also problematic. In Føroyar the only constant in the weather is change; by the moment. Compose, meter and expose, quick before the light changes. That's not a bad thing here. But it creates dilemma after dilemma in deciding which light shows her to her best.
Just go there. See for yourself. It's worth the price of entry. Oh, it's free, and a grand adventure.
