Toronto, Apr. 24, 2018 -n this era of #MeToo, misinformation, and media industry upheaval, the media has become the news and journalists who cover the beat are on the frontlines making front page headlines. Hear from reporters covering these turbulent Trumpian times: Michael Calderone, the senior media reporter at Politico who has built a steadfast career covering the intertwining worlds of the press and politics; and Emily Steel, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times business reporter who has covered sexual harassment in newsrooms — from reporting on the toxic culture at VICE Media to breaking the story, with a colleague, on multiple settlements by former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly. Ioanna Roumeliotis, reporter with CBC News' The National, moderates this discussion.

This event will bring together activists and comedians to discuss the ways in which comedy can push forward agendas such as #metoo and contemporary women’s rights movements, and how this effort can translate into meaningful change in women’s lives. The event will also showcase the work of UN Women and Mythos Labs in countering violent extremist recruitment narratives—and their understandings of gender—through comedy. It features a comedy set by renown comedian and actress Aparna Nancherla.
In early 2018, UN Women partnered with Mythos Labs to produce a series of comedy videos to counter the messaging of terrorist groups in the Asia region. Working with female comedians in South Asia and South-East Asia, these sketches challenge the narratives used by violent extremist groups and counter extremist ideology in the online space. While this work was originally piloted to prevent and counter violent extremism, the implications go far beyond this realm. Comedy can and is being used to promote broader themes of women’s empowerment and gender equality, by not just making us laugh, but by challenging stereotypes with a broad and engaged audience.
This project is part of UN Women’s Empowered Women, Peaceful Communities programme, which is funded by the Government of Japan. This programme works in the Asia Pacific region to challenge the gendered dynamics of violent extremism and reverse its growing trend, through prioritizing women’s rights, empowerment, participation and leadership—in national decision-making and at the community level.

Washington DC, October 6, 2018. People gathered at the Supreme Court during the Senate vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh. The crowd was overwhelmingly anti-Kavanaugh although there was a small group of about 25 pro-Kavanaugh demonstrators. A mixture of dejection and determination washed over the crowd when the vote was announced.

Metoos condition has gotten worse earlier this month; For some that know of her previous brush with Cancer, well, the damn thing came back and was killing her.... The Vet told us to youthenize her, but I felt as though I haven't done enough to save her, and she hasn't gotten a chance to use her 9 lives. We did not want her to die alone in a cold cage, in a unknown surrounding. So bringing her home, we gave her Chinese Herbal medicine and prescription food to help her combat the Cancer. We're in week four and she is 8lbs, full of energy, and very very hungry! The Vet, who assumed Metoo was dead by now was amazed at her progress. The fight, though is not over. She is still not a 100%, so cross your fingers for her please!!!!
