She is also co-founder and CEO of News Deeply, a digital media company that mixes investigative reporting, expert analysis and community insights to create single-theme platforms that cover topics such as Syria, refugees and water. Setrakian was in conversation with Farah Nasser, anchor of Global News at 5:30 & 6. This event was a partnership with RTDNA Canada.

We hope the Harvey Weinstein scandal will change Hollywood irrevocably. The #MeToo & #TimesUp movements have forced a reckoning of industry’s predators and a sexist culture that let it all happen. Regal men have been dethroned. The business of mass entertainment may now hopefully become more diverse, in ways subtle & profound. A trend had begun before the scandal, but has been accelerated by it. A new braver, more inclusive, less stereotyped kind of film storytelling does not mean homogenising men and women, or eliminating sex and violence. It means telling good stories, but with a different, more diverse, more mature eye.

In 2017, Emily Joe started a #metoo movement within the church community to look at abuse in the church community.

During a quick coffee this morning at Aura, Chris told us about some fun #MeToo drama he’s on the fringes of at his old work. We didn’t hang around long though because Michael had a shoot at the Environmental Science building and I was coming along to assist. My primary job was to help build and tear down gear, and scooch lights around during the shoot.
The shoot went well overall. After we finished I popped that 12mm back on and wandered around the EESAT lobby taking pictures of the massive room. They look pretty cool, but it’s all gray and gross outside so I think I can do better later.
We had two meetings about the BLB event that both went fine. The photo/video folks pretty much know what to do already, but we still have to go to these meetings. We did stop at the Study on the way back to the office.
After work I stopped at Courtney’s place. We shared a little wine and conversation–a nice little bit of relaxation to close out the week, even though we both had more stuff going on in the evening. She played five typewriters as instruments with some improv, performance art band thing, and I checked out Jonathan’s ACTUAL gallery opening. His show opening coincided with two other show openings: “Materials Hard and Soft” and some famous quilt person’s work. The whole thing was really good! I spent a lot more time there than I thought I would, and I didn’t even eat any snacks!
#MeToo, Women in the Media: From Outcry to Action: The ‘Me Too’ movement continues to gain momentum and spread across the globe exposing the scale and reach of sexual violence. Media can be powerful players in driving women’s empowerment and gender equality as part of the Sustainable Development Agenda. This event aims to seize this opportunity, to move from the global outcry against gender discrimination, and showcase solutions to move from discussions to action and end this scourge once and for all. This event will focus on #Metoo, Time’s up, pay gap and other current issues in the news and entertainment media industries and beyond, and will have the participation of the FM of Norway, and the Editor in Chief of The Guardian. Co-organized by: Norway, The Guardian and UN Women. Participants (more to be confirmed): Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women, Ine Eriksen Søreide, Foreign Minister of Norway, Polly Toynbee, journalist, the (moderator)
