Highlights from the Library's 'Sendak Sunday Reading Rumpus'

Rest in Peace Maurice Sendak, writer and honorary member of the American Sealyham Terrier Club. Most know him as author of "Where the Wild Things Are." But we know him for his children's book about his little Sealy named Jennie. Now they are crossing the rainbow bridge together.

What a wonderful find... looking at the original art from "Where the Wild Things Are" was a total treat.

Where the Wild Things Are

Maurice Sendak in His Own Words and Pictures, a multi media exhibit about the life-long art of Maurice Sendak on display at the Lancaster Museum of Art. It was cool!

Duane and I experienced the Lancaster Art Walk. We visited many different shops, ate at our favorite Lancaster bar (Lancaster Dispensing Company, we had Pesto and Brie and shared a veggie grinder and booze) and visited a scary artist studio. Good fun! The only thing is...it was like 84 degrees...IN APRIL. That is just wrong

Highlights from the Library's 'Sendak Sunday Reading Rumpus': Youth Services staff performs a (very) dramatic reading of Where the Wild Things Are, complete with gnashing teeth, rolling eyes, and claws.

White fur was then sewn on to the body (done by Jeni!) and arms and legs added just with the fur. The feet were simple circles of foam with the fur layered on top, which would later go over my shoes.

Check out the blog post about making the 'Where the Wild Things Are' Costumes, for more details.

On Wednesday, January 19, 2011, The Chertoff Mural moved to its permanent home at the Rosenbach Museum & Library. A team of eight art handlers and conservators transported the mural from the truck to the museum’s Maurice Sendak Gallery where the mural was installed and conservation work was completed. Mural conservator Cassie Myers and Judith Guston, the Rosenbach’s Curator and Director of Collections, oversaw the process.

A Wild Thing ate my chocolate bar! (If you look close, you can see the chocolate smudge on his upper lip!)

Highlights from the Library's 'Sendak Sunday Reading Rumpus': Max's private boat, where we collected donations for the local food pantry.

"They believe they've won the fight,

they believe I'm gone - not quite!

Nothing ever works out neatly

Bullies don't give up completely.

One departs, the next appears

and we shall meet again my dears!

though I go, I won't go far...

I'll be back.

Love,

Brundibar"

~from the children's book by Tony Kushner & Maurice Sendak

Maurice Sendak's classic kids book that teaches us that there's a time and place to be wild. If you've never read it, then your life is lacking, this book should be read by EVERYONE. We have most of the characters in plush form too, for cuddling with while reading! We also have other books by Maurice Sendak.

Part of a graffiti mural spotted in Newtown, Sydney and depicting a scene from the famous children's book "Where the Wild Things are" by Maurice Sendak. I can't wait to see the film which is due out later this year. The rest of the mural was unfortunately defaced by an "urban-style" graffiti.

Maurice Sendak Loveblogged

20.05.2012 @ Wicker Park (Chicago, IL)

An embroidery my mother did of Maurice Sendak's childrens story "Where The Wild Things Are". She wrote to him for permission to reproduce and he told her he had no problem with that. Must have been about 25 years ago.
