"...And Max the king of all wild things was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all. Then all around from far away across the world he smelled good things to eat so he gave up being king of where the wild things are. But the wild things cried, "Oh please don't go- we'll eat you up- we love you so!" And Max said, "No!" The wild things roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws but Max stepped into his private boat and waved good-bye and sailed back over a year and in and out of weeks and through a day and into the night of his very own room where he found his supper waiting for him- and it was still hot." Maurice Sendak - Where the Wild Things Are
This is for my mom, when I was young she would read Where the Wild Things Are pretty much every night. She had it memorized. Going back and reading it now, It impacts me so much. I get to the last 4 pages and start to tear up.
I love her. A lot.
And I know that I'll always have somewhere where I can be loved best of all.

“The monster showed up just after midnight. As they do.”
―(Patrick Ness)―
The monsters aren't just in the pages of Maurice Sendak's novel. They are everywhere - in the shadows of the closet, hiding beneath the bed and, occasionally, perched next to the keyboard of my computer.
I was Mystery Reader at my daughter's school and had to pick a book and bring a craft for the kids. They look easy to make. But not so much for 1st graders...

Stay the king of all the wild things. Don't let the world tame your imagination. Stay in your wolf suit a little longer please.
Part of the 2014 Sand Sculpture Festival at Weston-super-Mare that this year is entitled 'Once Upon a Time' and features famous children's stories. This one, by Czech artist Jan Zelinka is based on the book 'Where The Wild Things Are' written by Maurice Sendak in 1963. This is Zelinka's fourth appearance at this festival.
"Higgelty Piggelty Pop" written and illustrated by Maurice Sendak (1928 -2012) Harper Collins Pub 1967. The story of Jennie, a Sealyham Terrier (one of my favorite breeds) and her quest for adventure and experiences out of her pampered life. Marvelous story with the charming illustrations of Mr. Sendak. In my collection.
An answer to the quote in the collage _
Money can't buy everything but I don't need anything it can't buy.
"The night Max wore his wolf suit and made mischief of one kind... and another
his mother called him "WILD THING!"
and Max said "I'll EAT YOU UP!"
so he was sent to bed without eating anything.
That very night in Max's room a forest grew.. and grew-
and grew until his ceiling hung with vines and the walls became the world around
and an ocean tumbled by with a private boat for Max
and he sailed off through night and day
and in and out of weeks and almost a year to where the wild things are.
And when he came to the place where the wild things are they roared their terrible roars and gnashed their terrible teeth
and rolled their terrible eyes and showed their terrible claws
til Max said "BE STILL!" and tamed them with the magic trick
of staring into all their yellow eyes without blinking once
and they were frightened and called him the most wild thing of all
and made him king of all wild things
"And now", cried Max, "let the wild rumpus start!"...

I heard on the news this morning that Maurice Sendak passed away today...
So I wanted to pay tribute to his brilliance...Such a wonderful author and classic book!

I bought my favourite children's book in english at Shakespeare and Company in Paris. There's no book I used to relate to as much as this one as a child; I was, and still am, Max. I also love the little stamp they put in all the books sold there.

Illustration by Maurice Sendak for a textbook co-authored by his high-school physics teacher Maxwell Leigh Edinoff in 1947. I am amused by Sendak's depiction of how atoms form molecules. It's so 1940s.

"El sueño de la razón produce monstruos", dijo Francisco Goya. Goya said the sleep of reason produces monsters. He had a point. But reading Poe, in the company of my own monsters, is keeping me awake.
I can't wait to see this! My sister and I loved this book when we were little and still do!
