Fummo curiosi e poco compiacenti

Have you ever watched Lord of the Rings? or the any of the three Narnia's? What about Pirates of the Caribbean? The majority of the amazing scences and landscapes (mount doom, Aslan's Table, and many many others) are all paintings done by a famous and rare breed of artists known as matte painters. Now what makes a matte painter different then a compositor or even just a typical landscape photographer? The main difference is that they paint with photographs. They takes photographic elements (layers), and matte, (merge) them together to form an entirely different and new image. Its amazing and very very difficult to do correctly. Compositing is similar in that you take two or more images and merge them together but the end goal and means to reach that goal are entirely different. While a compositor works mainly with masks and gradients and matte painter relies much less on masks and much more on their talents and abilities to use on image and manipulate, color, and transform it to suit their purposes. To sum it up the main difference I see is that a compositor is a slave to the images, limited to maskablity and the color of the content while the matte painter has no such limitations. They are more free to pick and choose, they are artists before photographers and therefore have the ability to manipulate and change in was the a compositor is usually unable to do realistically due to their limitations in artistry. If a matte painter can't find the right tree or rock or cloud, he'll just paint it in.

I've been a compositor for a long time, mixing and matching but never brushing in or manipulating shape or form. The brush tool was for painting masks, taking matter away, never for adding it it. That has all changed with this image. I have been awakened to a new form of art, a very challenging form of art. I'm afraid mine is a very poor sampling as well, yet it is my start and as such it is appropriate to share. If you really want to see what matte painting is all about watch that Mount Doom scene again, yes it was animated, and yes its a multi-layer painting! It blew my mind! I have had so many images in my head just wanting to come out, yet I could never find the scenery to duplicate it, I could never find the pieces in my photography to composite it. Now though I have seen that my camera is not the limitation nor the scenery around me, it is my own skill, ability and imagination holding me back. Therefore I declare it to be a time of expansion, of change, of growth. Its also time to get a wacom tablet! (I did this painting with my all to clumsy trackpad, yes I said trackpad)

If you watch any of those you probably notice fairly quickly there are both 2D matte painting (like what I did) and 3D matte painting. (my next project)

Swedish House Mafia - Leave This World Behind

Tesla Cybertrucks are an everyday sight around South Florida nowadays. So, I guess more people are investing in wraps to differentiate their own vehicle, rather than having the same stainless-steel look. I'll post some of those that I've seen.

Scanned from matte prints so a lot of detail and colour was lost :(

This matte painting took out top honors in a contest over at CGChannel. The competition was run by Jonathan Berube, who kindly provided a great plate to work from. The task was to remove any signs of the modern world, then add Rivendell and modify the environment until it looked like it sat in the world of the Hobbit / LOTR films.

I 3d modelled the buildings of Rivendell in Maya and then painted over the renders. Photographic resources were my own photos from China, and from cgtextures.com. Then I reprojected the matte back onto 3D geometry to create and animated camera move below. I also animated the birds and composited in some practical mist effects.
