My first attempt at matte painting, this piece was based on a simple plate I shot myself up at Cypress Mountain, Vancouver, Canada.
All the photographic resources used in the creation of this piece were either shot by me, or sourced from cgtextures.com
I created this matte under the guidance of the talented David Luong in his CGWorkshop - Photo Real Matte Painting Part 1.
I've also created a short animated pan of the shot with a plate composited in that I also shot. You can see the video over on my webiste at www.cavematty.com/Matte-Paintings
Matte always seems a little more natural but I love the look of glossed parts, especially on darker colors. The gloss makes the surface more shimmery, details are more in focus, semi-transparent areas become less opaque, and the colors become richer and darker. I'm always recommending gloss for darker items and things I feel could benefit from the more metallic look so I thought I should make a comparison.
