Thomas Matte (1907-2005)
After Reggie Matte discussed his grandfather, Thomas Matte, during a “Rendezvous in the Prairie” music program at the Prairie Acadian Cultural Center, Jan. 3, 2026, I returned home and, while searching my Flickr pages, realized I had never uploaded photos I had taken of Thomas Matte. This is the first photo I look of him in 1999 at age 92 playing in a jam session located outside at the Church Point Depot. As I recall, it was early summer, shortly after I decided to begin assembling a web collection of photos of Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco musicians.
In 1999, after playing music for most of his life, Thomas Matte finally made his first recording. It the song "The Accordion Lesson," written by Buddy Hoffpauir, whose inspiration was the relationship between Thomas Matte and his grandson, Reggie Matte, accordionist with The Jambalaya Cajun Band. The song is included on the band's 1999 CD Lessons Learned, released by Swallow Records.
On an LSUE web page with his photos, I described Thomas Matte’s 2002 performance at Festival International in Lafayette: “Thomas Matte, looking about two decades younger than his actual age, sat on the stage like it was a front porch, his fingers moving across the keys with an effortlessness achieved through a lifetime of experience.”
