Following the capture of Matamoros by the Constitutionalists, several of the Federalist prisoners were executed. This photograph shows the execution of 23-year-old Antonio Echazaretta, a volunteer colonel who led other volunteers in defending Matamoros against the Constitutionalists attack.

Refugees from Matamoros, Mexico fled across the Rio Grande to Brownsville, Texas as Mexican Constitutionalist soldiers under the command of Colonel Lucio Blanco closed in to attack the Federalist garrison and take control of Matamoros. Charity House, in Brownsville, was overwhelmed by refugees who could find no other shelter.

Early on June 4, 1913, Mexican Federalists surrendered Matamoros to Mexican Constitutionalist forces. Robert Runyon photographed this group of Constitutionalist soldiers riding unopposed into Matamoros.

Mexican Federalist soldiers set up street barricades in Matamoros, Mexico as defense from the Mexican Constitutionalist forces led by Colonel Lucio Blanco. On June 3, 1913, Constitutionalist forces defeated the Federalist garrison in Matamoros and captured the city. The following day Robert Runyon traveled to Matamoros and photographed scenes such as this throughout the city.
