Daniel Smith water soluble relief ink is wonderful stuff, but I've discovered its shelf life is not infinite. It's time to test some colors I'm likely to use, while there's time to order fresh supplies; and to test some old ink I know behaves badly, to give me a standard of comparison.

I'd set aside some debris recovered from a home repair project for a large, crude, mid-year (i.e., between cards) print project: a piece of badly weathered, grainy wood; some torn asphalt roofing shingle; and some corroded sheetmetal. Perfect! Unfortunately someone apparently threw them away...perhaps because they so resembled debris?

I still had a piece of weathered redwood: part of a deck I helped Tomusan build, and then helped him demolish a couple of decades later. I took a piece home, thinking it might be good printing material. Too bad I could never find anyone willing to risk planer blades on it; but the grain was interesting in its own right.

A heavily marked-up and graffiti'ed Chicago Reader newspaper box provides a nice backdrop for the sharply designed ginkgo leaf.

Thanks to Mr. Wang from MT, last week I received a package of masking tape samples which are limited editions only to be sold in their very own new shop near Waseda University in Tokyo.

Kamoi's beautiful washi paper made masking tapes are getting so popular, many end user inspiration just keep coming in as evident from MT's web site. These new patterns and sizes you see here gives a hint about MT's development, more applications built-in to the tapes, like labels, wallpaper, wrapping paper and Xmas versions.

Check out MT's blog and you'll see how the shop looks like, can't wait to be there next year. If you can imagine it, Kamoi can make it, so don't be shy to send mail to them to suggest new product ideas.

Appears to be Masking Tape instead of the obligatory Gaffar or Duct tape.

Jumping Spider (Salticidae family)

This tiny little spider (smaller than a centimeter) was scampering around my kitchen window sill. After reading about stacking lenses in reverse in Paul Harcourt Davies' Complete Guide to Close-Up & Macro Photography and seeing some Flickr photos that used the method, I decided to make the jumping spider my first real subject using this technique. I used the built-in zoom lens of my trusty point-and-shoot camera (instead of a 100-200mm prime lens with an SLR) and a 24mm Sigma lens as the (reversed) supplemental lens. While photographing this little arachnid, I also watched it stalk, capture, and kill a small flying insect. With eight eyes and remarkable jumping ability, this jumper is quite the hunter. It was not easy to take photos of this spider (the hardest challenge was the working distance--less than 2 in. or 5 cm.), but I managed to get a few decent shots.

35mm eq. focal length: 123mm

The E30 masked off and ready for a "rattle can" spray paint special.

The Team America Super Stunt Dirt Bike, my favorite childhood birthday present. I got it when I turned 7 on Jan 13, 1981, and still play with it 29 years later! The winder/launcher/crank eventually broke apart, but duct tape has held it together over the decades.

The internet barely mentions this toy as existing, and there are barely any pictures. When I posted a low-quality YouTube video of it in action, I eventually received requests to do a photo shoot of the toy, to prove that it existed. So here they are, world! Enjoy!

By the way, the plastic geras in the winding unit make a decent fingernail file. And the Rugrats sticker was added in 2010, simply because I like to put stickers on things and had a sticker laying around.
