NOBBY: "Hello! This is my first attempt at cooking haggis: I hope it turns out OK. Dad says he'll help me and hold my paw so that I get it right. The potatoes are peeled and the swede is prepared, the haggis is about to go in the microwave so here goes..."
Burns Night, the anniversary of the birth of Scottish poet Robert Burns, is celebrated annually on 25 January.
The tradition of the Burns Night Supper was first held in 1801 by the poet's friends, five years after his death. Today, the day - otherwise known as Robert Burns Day - has become popular around the UK.
Widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland, Burns is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language. He also wrote in English and is regarded as a pioneer of the Romantic movement. After his death, he became a source of inspiration to founders of liberalism and socialism and greatly influenced Scottish literature.
His most recognised works include Auld Lang Syne, often sung at Hogmanay or New Year's Eve, and Scots Wha Hae, which became an unofficial Scottish national anthem.
Whisky is the usual choice of tipple on Burns Night, either malts or blends. It is traditional to pour a dram over the haggis, but most prefer not to as it changes the taste of the meat and can turn the meal soggy.
Historically, grace is said before a Burns Supper. As the main course was brought in - traditionally a haggis - the host would recite the poem Address to a Haggis.

Sausage Trio, Mash and Cabbage with Onion Gravy.
Nice and hearty on a cold Autumn day.
I got the Moroccan, Lamb Spinach and Pinenut, and Chicken, asparagus and corn, sausages from David Jones Food Hall in Melbourne. They tasted quite good, but I remember them being more chunky and less processed. They are better quality than most "thin" sausages, higher meat content and less fatty.
The traditional way, this time! There would be a veggie, but right about this time our microwave decided to impress us with an internal fireworks display..
My very first vegan Thanksgiving Meal! I've been a vegetarian for more than half my life. I'm making an effort to cook and bake vegan as often as I can. This is the first Tofurky Roast I've ever had, although I have the Tofurky Deli Slices regularly. I am SO pleased with how it turned out. I feel really great about having made it without any animal products. It was delicious and there are plenty of leftovers.
Before gravy (top photo) and after.
• A basted Tofurky Roast with carrots, potatoes, and onions.
• Vegan Dressing made with homemade Anadama and Italian Breads.
• Garlic mashed potatoes made with soy milk and Earth Balance Spread.
• Vegan brown sauce from a mirepoix with red wine.
• Steamed organic veggies.
• Cranberry sauce.
• Sparkling Cranberry-Apple Juice.
• Vegan Pumpkin Pie for dessert (see below).

I admit it to the world- I am a fried chicken whore. This was among the best I've ever had. Not only was the chicken outstanding, the mashed potatoes and cole slaw were perfect. If you ever find yourself in Hays Kansas- Please go to Al's Chickenette. Great chicken and a fantastic neon sign
