Rotterdam - the Netherlands

On October 1st the new Market Hall in Rotterdam will be opened. The building contains a food market, restaurants, shops and 228 apartments. Designed by MVRDV architects and nicknamed 'The Sistine Chapel of Rotterdam', the Market Hall is already considered to be an architectural masterpiece.

Week-12 Architecture: Windows looking out

This weeks challenge made me travel to the "Market hall" in Rotterdam. It is the largest indoor market in the Netherlands. It is a large building where living, leisure and love of food are combined. The building really represents the character of Rotterdam. Even in the hardest time still striving forward (it was build during the financial crisis).

Through the window you can see the building "the pencil" also one of Rotterdams famous buildings.

I'm so lucky to work in one of the most innovative cities in the world.

I really want to go back to the Market hall since I had to rush over there to get a picture during my lunchbreak. There are so much more beautiful pictures to be taken over there.

The Market Hall is located in Rotterdam centre in the part that is called the Blaak area.

Rotterdam the dutch city of architecture and therefore the Rotterdam Market Hall design is cutting edge with the shape of a giant airplane hangar.

The interior of the Rotterdam Market Hall is one-of-a-kind due to the huge colourful panels on the walls and ceiling, depicting lots and lots of fruit. The front and back entrance of the Market Hall is made draught-proof by means of a huge glass facade. The indoor Market Hall in Rotterdam is multifunctional, as it offers an underground car park and luxurious apartments.

During the construction of the Market Hall of Rotterdam, many old remains of the medieval forerunner of the city of Rotterdam, called Rotta, were excavated. These finds (chandeliers, pots, kettles) are exhibited at the escalators. The deeper you go, the older the objects get.

There's no such thing as good weather guarantee in the Netherlands, so if you still want to have that market feeling on a rainy day, the Market Hall will make your day. Seven days per week! On the ground floor you'll find over 100 market booths with fresh vegetables, fresh fish, flowers, plants and other specialties.

Those of you who sometimes visit Rotterdam probably recognize where this photo was taken.

It is part reflection, part refraction of a scene in the heart of the city.

The Markthal in Rotterdam is a recently opened block of apartments in a large arch shaped building which houses an indoor market inside. The internal cathedral-like ceiling and walls are covered in enormous bold coloured photographs of various types of food while the stalls have a great variety of the real things.
