The Market Hall (Dutch: Markthal or Koopboog) is a residential- and office building with a market hall underneath, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-story parking garage.

The grey nature stone building has an archwise structure like a horseshoe. The building has a glass facade on both sides, these are made up of smaller glass windows. The smaller windows are mostly squared and around 1485 millimeters wide. All of these are hung around a structure of steel cables, 34 metres high and 42 metres wide, which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe.

Persoonlijk vind ik dit één van de mooiste moderne gebouwen in Rotterdam

Ja, auch das ist eines meiner typischen HDR: 5 Einzelbilder, in Lightroom verrechnet und mit Photoshop aufgepeppt.

Yes, this is one of my typical HDR: 5 frames, charged in Lightroom and spiced up with Photoshop.

Rotterdam, Nederland

The Markthal is a horseshoe shaped market hall combined with apartments and offices. Designed by MRVDV. The artwork inside is by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam and is called "Hoorn des Overvloeds" (Horn of Plenty).

A little intermezzo from the nature impressions i am posting on and on. Here is a shot from a year ago. This impressive building is called "de markthal" and is now about a year old. There is not only a market inside, but on the side and the top are apartments. It is in the old center of Rotterdam that was bombed in 1940. it is 34 meters high, and the inside has great colorful paintings. It is an impressive building that only could be caught on camera (at this point) by stitching 6 pictures in PS.

The Markthal is a combination of a food market and an apartment complex (220 apartments). There are 92 food stalls on the floor of the hall and restaurants and food related stores around and under it. The apartments are at the sides and the top of the building.

It was designed by MVRDV with Winy Maas in the lead. It involved a long and complicated process in which obvious solutions like two parallel apartment slabs with a glass roof that would covered the sandwiched market floor were rejected because of its commonness.

The curved 11.000 square meter ceiling is entirely covered by an artwork, the ‘Horn of Plenty’. It was designed by Arno Coenen in cooperation with Iris Roskam, Marinus de Ruiter, Michiel van Iperen, Frank aan de Stegge, Dustin Kershaw en Frank Hanswijk. There was a discussion about it. The question was if it is real Art ;-) Check out Gekibbel in overvloed (Sorry, in Dutch).

By the way, there was also a discussion about the edifice itself. This was about its position in the urban grid and how it would take trade away from the open-air week market. On the commercial front, the traders in the Markthal are mostly upmarket, so it didn’t take much business away from the street market traders.

The Markthal played its intended role in making Rotterdam centre, a city that fits its size and has a lively urban culture. Due to buildings like this, it’s on the home stretch of shaking off its postwar functionalistic urbanistic shackles.

This is number 733 of Rotterdam architecture and number 39 of Fish-eyed.
