Freshly repainted SD60I 3882 leads sisters 3881 and 3883 through WS at Bonnie Brook with more empties for the MGA.

As I love nature, as I love singing birds, and gleaming stubble, and flowing rivers, and morning and evening, and summer and winter, I love thee, my Friend.

A nice eastern visitor in the form of Conrail's very first SD60I now sporting CSX's Bright Future scheme leads a southbound hopper train through Colorado Springs, CO.

I've previously shared a couple other shots of this train:

I wanted to get a full-on telemash to round out the chase, especially one showing the marker lights on. The ditch lights were not illuminated, so my assumption is the crew flipped the wrong switch in the cab.

Anyway, CSX's YN2 paint scheme looked really good on these widecab EMDs, at least that's my opinion...

A former Conrail SD60M and SD60I make easy work of a short train coming out of the "Lake O Dip" at Haddix Road. Running as G010, the crew would set their train of Lansing traffic out at Ensel yard before continuing east to put a grain train together in Webberville.

ARR 3015 backs its cruise train onto the siding in Portage, AK after a long day of traipsing around the state. This is our twentieth entry in the Alaska Revisited series.

This was the second of four trains I caught this particular evening in Portage. Saturdays in Alaska saw cruise trains running, so you had a few more opportunities to catch some action outside of the daily named-ARR trains.

Late day on the Sierra Railroad finds the daily westbound viewed from the stub-end tracks that lead to the Jamestown Tank and the depot. The mainline is visible coming in from the left side of the image. This tracks in the foreground originally serviced the branch to Angel's Camp. In the 1960's, however, this service was some 30-years gone and the track was used for serving steam locomotives at the tank. This was the tank that inspired the TV show Petticoat Junction.

I got up early yesterday to try and get a sunrise series of images around the theme of fruit tree blossoms here in the Niagara Peninsula. Such was the plan. But, as it generally the case, things did not go exactly to plan. So after a period of getting what I could before blossom season ends, I headed home and, more out of frustration than anything else, headed over to the mouth of the Forty Mile Creek in Grimsby, Ontario to try an capture some sunrise-over-Lake Ontario images. Luckily the light was a bit odd and very harsh. But that meant I could get a shot of the point of land, with its marker light, at the entrance to the local harbour. Hence a silhouette opportunity, admittedly assisted by a bit of under-exposure. The yellow hue was there and I took advantage of it in PP to bring it out a bit more and this is the result. - JW

As seen at Maghull Station on Merseyrail's Northern Line to Ormskirk from Liverpool. The bright approaching light is that of a Merseyrail Class 507 EMU bound for Ormskirk which will soon stop at this platform having crossed over the Station Rd/Melling Ln level crossing.

This was taken inside Brush Tunnel along the lines of the Western MD Scenic Railroad during the Spring Carl Franz photo freight special.

Let me tell you this was an epic experience inside the tunnel. Super loud, you could feel the heat, taste the coal and see the beast approach up close. Many thanks to Rob on Flickr for pointing me in the direction of Carl Franz so that this could happen. Truly an amazing experience that I hope to do again!

Though it wears CSX's newest paint scheme, there's no denying 2477's heritage. Built in 1983 as Conrail 6705, 2477 stills wears its Conrail FRA approved "Bug Eye" style marker lights, Conrail style plow and ditch lights mounted below the anti-climber. It was a regular in Lansing, MI for the better part of 3 months.

Pennsylvania Railroad M1a class 4-8-2 Mountain steam locomotive # 6759, is seen while on display at Worlds Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York City, 1939 - 1940. This is a grand example of a PRR workhorse steam locomotive that was used right until the end of steam in 1957, to haul heavy trains, but with its 72 inch drivers could still step right along. Note at this time the front end of the locomotive included two sets of marker lamps, one set located on the pilot beam and the other set mounted to the upper portion of the smoke box. Notice too the dog house used by the front brakeman that is situated on the tender's water deck.

The name of the photographer that captured this image on film is unknown. This photo came from my personal collection of Railroad images, however, this negative came from a friends personal collection.

I may have been a bit too close to the highway as I was attempting to get some Aurora shots along the Yellowhead Highway near Vegreville, Alberta, Canada

I had some free time after taking care of some business in Stoney Creek (technically the Regional City of Hamilton, Ontario) and decided that since I was in the area, I would head over to the Burlington Beach Strip to see what there might be to shoot in the mid-day hard sunlight. The canal that passes through the Burlington Beach Strip has protective entrance piers projecting into Lake Ontario and on the South pier is a large marker light, generally, and incorrectly, referred to as a lighthouse. The sky was dotted with a patchwork of clouds through which the sun peeked from time-to-time. After taking a number of pretty straight-forward shots of the light, I captured one just as the sun illuminated the light but the clouds left the pier and everything on it, in relatively deep shade. Now I have to admit this was a lucky shot as I had forgotten to switch the camera’s metering mode off spot and the spot happened to be on the bright walls of the light. The result is a nicely exposed white wall but a totally under-exposed (relatively) surrounding area. The result, with a bit of PP, reminded me of the style of some of Ernst Haas’ (ernst-haas.com/ ) work. - JW

I took a wander out onto the South pier of the Burlington Ship canal entrance into Burlington Bay to capture some images on a recent mid-afternoon featuring both intense, bright sun and clouds that frequently came across the area and softened the light a little. On the end of the pier is a marker light with a massive concrete base. To protect the many people who wander out here, a waist-height concrete wall keeps the unwary from falling into Lake Ontario. As I stood near the base, I realized a tight crop of the view to the Southeast could yield a sort of abstract with a look/colour palette similar to the type frequently used by one of my favourite painters, Alex Colville. This is the result after some finicky colour balance adjustments to get a suitable neutral look to the ‘white’ base of the light. - JW

First-generation Chevrolet-GMC van the first G-10 half-ton production years 1964 through 1966, in response to what GM identified as a market for a compact van based on a modified passenger car platform to compete with the Ford Econoline and Dodge A100. The 1964 Chevrolet-GMC van had a cab-forward design with the engine placed in a "doghouse" between and behind the front seats in a cab-over style Engines and brakes were sourced from the Chevy II. The model also sold by GMC as "Handi-Van". The 1st-generation vans were available in only the short 90-inch wheelbase A first-generation is identified by its single-piece flat windshield glass. The 1st-generation vans were available in only the short 90-inch wheelbase and were only sold with the standard 153 cu in (2.5 L) 90 hp straight-4 or a Chevrolet Straight-6 engine.

The second generation was launched in 1967 with a major facelift including moving the headlights down to a new redesigned grille, larger, rectangular taillights, and a curved windshield. The forward control cab design was retained, but the doghouse was lengthened, widened, and slightly relocated in order to fit an optional Chevrolet Small-Block engine. The second-generation vans were available in either the 90 or 108 in (2,286 or 2,743 mm) wheelbase lengths. 1968 saw the vans gain side markerlights in line with federal regulations. The optional V8 engine was upgraded to a 307 cu in (5.0 L) 2-barrel V8 producing 200 hp column change four speed (Borg-Warner T10) was now available as an option, as well as power brakes on the G20 3/4 ton vans.

Southern Shorthaul Railroad’s GM27 sits on the UP Main at Bethungra facing south. GM27, with 442s2, have arrived with 8M24N empty ARTC ballast train from Parkes. The train has arrived on the Down Main, then propelled back onto the UP Main using “B” Frame, and now waits for the ARTC Rep to operate “D” Frame to allow entry into the “Silo Road” for stabling. Here the train would be loaded with more ballast by using a frontend loader at a later date. Earlier in the day, the train dumped ballast between Trida & Matakana on the Parkes to Broken Hill line.

New Haven Railroad DERS-2b class ALCO RS-2 0506 derailed at Framingham, Massachusetts, ca mid 1950's. It appears that the locomotive rolled off the end of astub end siding. Workmen are out and about planning their methode to re-rail the locomotive. The worse apparent damage appears to be the smashed front end steps, but there also may be some traction motor damage including traction motor wiring damage. This RS-2 road switcher will be out of service for a short period to have its damage repaired. Do like to see the old marker lights mounted to the locomotive.

New Haven Railroad Brill Model 250 Gas-Electric Railcar # 9111 is seen situated in Boston, Massachusetts, June 1939. This Railcar along with various other of the same type, had standard railroad couplers applied so that they could haul a trailer. These Railcars were 76'-3" in length, and seated 85 passengers in a 3-2 seat arrangement, plus they also had an 11'-3" baggage compartment and were powered by a 250 hp engine generator set. In the early 1940's the 3-2 seating was changed to 2-2 plush covered coach seating, and the capacity was reduced somewhat. Brill Railcars 9106-9111 were delivered to the New Haven Railroad in 1927.
