Subject: Portrait of Mario Polia, renowned Italian anthropologist, archaeologist and expert in history of religions. About 10 years before this encounter, I purchased one of his books (a study on the Vikings' runes), thus I was very happy and I felt honoured to meet him. This picture was taken during the Festival Dei 2 Mondi [Festival of the 2 Worlds] 2013, held in Spoleto (Umbria - Italy), which I attended as a blogger for an Italian travel website.

It was cool and wet yesterday, but it was my day off so I trekked deep into the woods to spend some quality time with the mosquitoes. I stumbled upon the mushroom kingdom of Mario and got a few beautiful images enhanced by the diffused light through the forest canopy and the deep, saturated colors from the rain. These moments may have just made up for the second skin of mosquitoes that I contended with whenever I stopped to shoot.

Mario’s vessel on his most recent adventure, The Odyssey provides safe passage all over the world as he chases after the Princess Peach who has been captured by Bowser, who attends to wed the damsel in distress. Mario’s companion in Super Mario Odyssey is Cappy, an anthropomorphic hat who allows Mario to take the abilities of different creatures and objects throughout the saga. The airship itself is designed in Cappy’s image as it resembles a top hat that took to the skies with the help of Power Moons. In order to catch up with Bowser, Mario and Cappy must explore each world and find enough power moons to continue their journey!

This was an absolute labour of love for me since I bought my Nintendo Switch and Super Mario Odyssey back in March. I instantly fell in love with the game and was promptly inspired to build The Odyssey. It took me more than 3 months of on and off building to complete it, and many bricklink order to boot. A number of times I hit design roadblocks, but was able to perservere with the help of some peers and idea machines (huge shoutout to Tim, Alec, Simon, Tyler, Sean and Nick). I also have Victor from EclipseGrafx to thank for the fabulous custom minifigure and to Markus for the fabulous photo edit. Their support and constructive criticism are why I love this community so much. This was the most challenging build i’ve ever attempted and i’m really happy with how it turned out.

I rarely photograph guys, so when I do there is a really good reason. Mario is a local musician here in Columbia, SC and he is an incredible singer/songwriter. I've know him for years, and seen him perform both in a band and solo, but the results are wonderful either way. [Note: This was a conversation I had months before COVID-19. I'm not connecting with anyone during this time].
Mario was singing on the corner of State and Randolph. He was very friendly and had a smile on his face. He's been homeless for about five years. He's on a waiting list for housing, but that can take years (it's been two years for him). His mom is in senior housing. He can't sleep there, but he can shower there, so that helps him out.
He grew up on the West Side of Chicago, which is not a good place to be. He was raised by a single mom and he did his "juvenile thing", in his words and got involved in drugs and gangs, which landed him in prison. But he's in a better place now and knows that that kind of lifestyle is a dead end.
He's always enjoyed singing and was in a few talent competitions. He was depressed when some of his heroes (Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Prince) passed away. He wanted to pursue a career in music, but after seeing these artists pass away, he decided not to continue.
He has had some temp work, but nothing steady. His faith keeps him going.
He is Mario, he looks happy, when I asked where he lives,he pointed across the street and told me, thats department A over there B that of the beyond the C, you can find me somtimes in A others in C and he start laughing

Loano, SV. Mario. He was fishing with good company. Today I was searching for a subject with an important face, marked, one of that faces that told you a story.
Everything started with the Mystery Box I've made two weeks ago. Then I thought the pipe would be easy... Then the mushroom and finally Mario :) For now I'm happy with this but who knows? Maybe I'll do a full level one of these days :)
