This cross, on the cliff just west of the town, was erected in 1949 as a memorial to those drowned mariners who over centuries were buried hereabouts, and commemorates the passing of the Grylls' Act of 1808, since when victims were buried in the nearest consecrated ground.
A plaque on the reverse commemorates several Porthleven fishermen who were lost over time.
Memorial to 22 Porthleven fishermen who lost their lives in the following disasters, 'Desire' in 1871, 'Johanna' in 1876, 'Miriam' in 1886, 'Nile' in 1896, and 'Energetic' in 1948.
