The release of hundreds of Wild Turkeys across southern and central Ontario since 1984 has initiated the comeback of wild turkeys that since the early 1900's had been extinct in this province. I distinctly remember one coming onto our front porch in the winter of '97 and looking in our dining-room window.

At the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), March 3 was declared United Nations World Wildlife Day (WWD). This day holds significance as the day that the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was signed in 1973. The UNGA Resolution designated the CITES Secretariat as the facilitator for the global observance of this special day for wildlife on the UN calendar. UN World Wildlife Day has now become the global annual event dedicated to wildlife.

Lone giraffe photographed on the African savannah.

The reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata), also known as the Somali giraffe, is a subspecies of giraffe native to Somalia, southern Ethiopia, and northern Kenya. Reticulated giraffes can interbreed with other giraffe subspecies in captivity or if they come into contact with populations of other subspecies in the wild.

The reticulated giraffe is among the most well-known of the nine giraffe subspecies. Together with the Rothschild giraffe, it is by far the giraffe most commonly seen in zoos. Its coat consists of large, polygonal, liver-colored spots outlined by a network of bright-white lines. The blocks may sometimes appear deep red and may also cover the legs.

The extraordinary height of the Reticulated Giraffe allows them to browse on branches of trees that other hoofed animals cannot reach. This has helped make the Reticulated Giraffe one of the most successful animals of the African savannah. The Reticulated Giraffe feeds mainly on Acacia and Combretum trees, however, it will eat as many as 100 different plants depending on which are available at the time.

The Reticulated Giraffe gets a large amount of water from the dew on the leaves and from the water in the leaves. When it encounters a watering hole, it will drink up to 12 gallons at one time. – Wikipedia

BR Standard 4MT 2-6-4T 80151 at Lymington Pier station in the rain, on March 3rd 1967 - the last day of BR steam operation on the branch line. The loco returned to this station in later weeks, with various railtours.

It was withdrawn by BR in May 1967, and sent to Woodhams Brothers scrap yard at Barry. It was rescued in 1974, and ended up at the Bluebell Railway in 1998, where it was restored to steam in 2001, and returned to service again in July 2019 after its latest overhaul.

Today (2020) Lymington Pier station has been electrified and modernised, with 'bus shelters' on the platform..

Im sure you all are familar with Lou Costello from the famous Abbot and Costello and starred in the famous "Who's on first?" Lou is one of a few famous people to be born and raised in Paterson, NJ.

Louis Francis "Lou" Costello (March 6, 1906 – March 3, 1959) was an American actor and comedian best known as half of the comedy team of Abbott and Costello, with Bud Abbott. Costello was famous for his bumbling, chubby, clean-cut image that has appealed to many Americans over the decades, and for his famous shouted line of "HEEEEYYY ABBOTT!!."

Lou Costello was born as Louis Francis Cristillo in Paterson, New Jersey to an Italian father from Calabria, and a mother of French and Irish ancestry. He attended School 15 at Paterson, NJ and was considered a gifted athlete, he excelled in basketball and reportedly was once the New Jersey state foul shot champion. (His singular basketball prowess can be seen on film, in Here Come The Co-Eds (1945), in which Lou performs all his own tricky hoop shots without special effects.) He also fought as a boxer under the name "Lou King."

In 1927, Costello went to Hollywood to become an actor - but could only find work as a laborer or extra at MGM and Warner Brothers. His athletic skill brought him occasional work as a stunt man, notably in The Trail of '98, (1927). He can also be spotted sitting ringside in the Laurel and Hardy film "The Battle of the Century "

On June 26, 1992, the city of Paterson, New Jersey in conjunction with the Lou Costello Memorial Association erected a statue of Lou Costello in the newly named Lou Costello Memorial Park in the city's historic downtown section. The statue has had brief appearances in two episodes of The Sopranos: "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Cold Stones".

In 2005, Madison Street, in the Sandy Hill section of Paterson, where Costello was born, was renamed Lou Costello's Place.

This former city garage has been leased to the Greater Port Clinton Area Arts Council for 50 years at $1 per month (0.72 GBP per month). The building has begun its transformation into a community-based arts and cultural center which will be known as "The Art Garage". This will be an exciting project to watch.

Attention: Due to the overwhelmingly positive response we've had to our photo stream we’re having to pare down the amount of archived material we leave open to the public to make it easier for our valued guests to locate new images… As the “group photos” garner the most attention and appear most popular we’ll endeavor to keep access to these priceless pictures open for at least two months. Many kind thanks, Earth & Sky team.

Bluffland Whitetails Association (BWA) believes that improved deer management practices, based upon sound scientific research by wildlife professionals, can produce a healthy, balanced deer herd without reducing hunter opportunities. BWA is not a "trophy deer" or "quality deer management" organization. A balanced deer herd will benefit hunters, landowners and the public and ensure a brighter future for whitetails and whitetail-related recreation.

Day 62 Asthma Inhalers

March 3rd 2010

As part of the "31 secrets" theme for march.....

Anyways, here goes! Not a real secret, but now you all know! Asthma is a family complaint, my mother died in 1996 as a result of sever asthma age 52, her father died the year I was born age 55 from emphysema, his mother also died of a lung related illness.

I developed asthma at the age of 16 in 1985, and it suddenly went away in 2003 when I moved here. It came back last year and ended up in A&E at 3 am!

Now I have been diagnosed with a bad dust allergy, so along with serious cleaning and the inhalers it is under control
