Quite a few vehicles have been adjusted to say Arnold Front Street on the boards now instead of Front St...
425 rests on King Street with a 25 to Arnold via Carlton Hill, Westdale Lane and Mapperley.
Majestic Cinema, Mapperley, Nottingham. Designed by A J Thraves and opened in 1929, the Majestic seated 721 in stalls and circle. It closed in 1957 and was converted (with minimal alteration) to a store. More recently it has been reopened as The Old Cinema, a paranormal museum with a cafe. On selected nights horror films are screened using some balcony seating.

Grey 53/54 is a sparsely operated route which connects Clifton and Arnold via Clifton Bridge, QMC and City Hospital. The routes have very few branded vehicles, with this being one of them.
357 is unusually seen on Queen Street in Nottingham before taking out the next 40 to, one of the few areas the vehicle is actually branded for, City Hospital (and Edward's Lane Estate) via St Ann's, Mapperley Plains, Sherwood and Edward's Lane.

I've spent so many hours in Nottingham trying to find the first of 2 remaining gas buses on the Lilac Line, about twice a week in fact, Well today turned out to be so lucky as both required ones were out today as well as 420 and 421. The entire fleet is out! So is 2 old 2 spare.

Another spare I'd not caught up with since repaint, this one has evaded me for months!!
687 passes Bath Street in Sneinton with a 25 to Arnold via Carlton, Mapperley and Daybrook.
This is a rather odd scene. Mapperley Tunnel was lined with blue brick but water ingress has caused spalling of the brick faces throughout large sections of the tunnel. Towards the southern portal, the tunnel is relatively dry in comparison to what you find further in but that hasn't prevented localised spalling.
At this point, the spalling has only affected a small part of the arch but the pattern is symmetrical, making this view quite peculiar. In fact, the lines of red brick almost look like a cross. Does X mark the spot?
Nottingham City Transport bus YX13BNU, Fleet no 377, passes the junction with The Priors road as it trundles up Main Street in Lowdham Village on 24th. August whilst working service 47 to Nottingham. The bus, an Alexander-Dennis E20D B33F supplied new to NCT in July 2013, will proceed to the villages at Epperstone, Oxton, Calverton, Woodborough and Lambley before heading directly to Nottingham via Mapperley.
This service will cease to run to this part of Nottinghamshire after Saturday 27th. August 2016 but will be cut back to Lambley and Woodborough villages. We are informed that the service is not commercially viable beyond these two villages and that funding from the County Council for the extended service has been withdrawn as part of "The Cuts" in council services demanded by Central Government.
The first of the tunnels I'm going to show you from my trip south of the border is Mapperley Tunnel. It happened to be the last tunnel we visited but this one packs a punch. I'm also taking the rare decision to upload all my photos of this tunnel at once.
A tunnel's portal is often a welcoming sight, both when you first arrive as you want to know what's lurking in the darkness and on the return journey as it means it's time to head home. The portal at Mapperley is very imposing but it's the only one this tunnel has as half of the tunnel has been backfilled. At one point, you'd have been able to see right through this 1132 yard long tunnel as it's dead straight but that's no longer the case.
Mapperley Tunnel was worked from six construction shafts with three of them being retained for ventilation purposes. Today, only the southernmost shaft remains open as the northernmost shaft has been capped. This presumably happened when the tunnel was backfilled up to its midpoint. The central shaft is still technically open but so much rubbish has been thrown down it that only a small bit of light can make it down.
Therefore, other than the southern portal, this open shaft is the only point where natural light can enter the bore. The shaft is supported by a cast iron ring and signs of this tunnel's problem with water ingress are clearly visible at this point. This can be noted by both the presence of calcite running down the walls and the fact that almost all the bricks have lost their facings. If the bricks still had their facings, this section of the tunnel would be predominantly blue.
The southern portal of Mapperley Tunnel isn't in great condition. At one point, wooden beams ran the length of the tunnel but today, only one remains in place whilst the rest lie on the floor. The large, square holes indicate where the crossbeams would have been situated.
Significant spalling has also taken place around the portal. Large chunks of brickwork have fallen out of the side walls and in some places, only a flimsy pillar of brick seems to be holding things up. Thankfully, the condition of the tunnel improves as you head further into the darkness.
Technically, this was my test shot for the 89A in the background but this came out pretty well...
339 waits at the traffic lights on Parliament Street with a 40X to the City Hospital via St Ann's Wells Road, Mapperley Rise, Sherwood and Edward's Lane.
From one link service to another, Silverdale of Nottingham provide the shoplink services which connect communities with supermarkets - this one, for example, is the S11 from Mapperley and St. Anns to Carlton Tesco and Netherfield Morrisons.
It's normally a low floor bus owing to the nature of the route, i.e. for older persons, but on this occasion, Mercedes-Benz Cheetah MCT612 was being used.
Sometimes, when photographing tunnels, I like to take a slightly different approach to my normal light painting techniques. In this instance, both my friend and myself stood in front of the camera and shone our torches down towards the tunnel's central shaft. We both use the same type of torch so the light was consistent.
This photo will hopefully also give an impression of how dark these spaces actually are. Despite the shutter being open for 30 seconds, none of the natural light from the portal which is a 1/3rd of a mile away at this point managed to light up the area behind where we were standing.

I was walking around the local area looking for my daily photo this afternoon at the same hour as youngsters of various ages were heading home from their respective schools. Just as I was passing a trio of teenage girls, expecting whatever one might expect when passing a trio of teenage girls – staring, giggling, insults – one of them very deliberately broke away from her friends, came over to me and told me quite sincerely that she was sorry about my father. How could she know? Was there something in my demeanour? How could an absolute stranger be so specific? She explained that she’d been singing in the church choir on Sunday, at the service during which we’d received Dad’s ashes and taken them outside to be buried, that she’d noticed all the family members mourning in the front row and that she’d felt our pain.
Nevertheless, for her to have paid such attention to the faces of a group of strangers as to be able to recognise one of them in passing, even only several days later, and for her to have felt the need to break away from her friends, even just for a moment, to offer a few words of condolence to a person completely unknown to her, leaves me stunned. She’ll grow up just fine...

A few minutes later, the 56 from Arnold at 7am made an appearance going the other way, the service running approximately every 15 minutes at this time of the morning making it easier to document the off-route happenings as opposed to during the day when they're every 30 minutes.
492 is seen off route on Mapperley Plains with a 56 to Nottingham via Arno Vale, Daybrook and Sherwood.

I have no concrete proof this was ever a petrol station, the earlier street view images showing this site was trading as King Motor Co.
The standing pole sign in those early images does suggest to me that fuel had been sold at some point, maybe this is an old Mobil sign but can't be sure.
By August 2018 the site was trading as Vehicle Procurements Ltd (VP) who had also rebranded the site, including the old sign, there was also an old Morris van with the company name on the forecourt. Vehicle Procurements Ltd had left the site by May 2023.
Just over a year later the site had opened up as Harry's car wash which it remains in the present day.

Mapperley Hall is buried in the middle of Mapperley Park. The only give-away to those not in the know is the road name - Mapperley Hall Drive, except it's not on that road, but on Lucknow Avenue, just to make it easy. It's main attraction is probably its age rather than its architectural style, but it's still a nice example of late Georgian architecture and is Grade II listed.
An unusual allocation even for a spare is the sight of an Enviro 200 on the Sky Blue services. For now....

Gedling Station was on the Great Northern Railway's Derbyshire and Staffordshire line from Colwick to Derby Friargate and Egginton Junction, Staffs. The line (and this station) opened in 1875 and provided a through route for trains from Derby to Grantham and the East Coast, avoiding Nottingham. In 1960 the main line was closed to both passenger and freight traffic when Mapperley Tunnel, north of the station, closed due to mining subsidence. Trains from Colwick continued to run past the Station to Gedling Colliery until that closed in 1991. The track has now been lifted and all trace of the platforms removed. The other side of the building fronts the A6211, Shearing Hill, Gedling.

Haddon Tunnel's fourth shaft is located within the 350 yard long bored section of the tunnel and as such, it's the only shaft not to let in huge amounts of natural light. Light from shaft 3, 2 and 1 can be seen in the distance. A lot of water enters the tunnel at this point, as signified by the calcite deposits that coat the tunnel walls.
As with a lot of open shafts, things have been thrown down this one, although the pile is nothing like the one in Mapperley.
