Stripping off the old finish is the order of the day--I'm starting with everything that comes off the cabinet, like the pedal lyre here. I got some paint/varnish stripper that doesn't give off lots of toxic fumes, which was a relief. Also, it looks like the piano was previously painted without stripping the original varnish, so I should be able to get it all the way back down to the bare wood and refinish it. If they'd stripped it and then painted it, no such luck.
