Mandarin Duck (Aix galericulata)-The species was once widespread in eastern Asia, but large-scale exports and the destruction of its forest habitat have reduced populations,The adult male is a striking and unmistakable duck. It has a red bill, large white crescent above the eye and reddish face and "whiskers". The breast is purple with two vertical white bars, and the flanks ruddy, with two orange "sails" at the back. The female is similar to female Wood Duck, with a white eye-ring and stripe running back from the eye, but is paler below, has a small white flank stripe.
This male Mandarin Duck mysteriously appeared in a pond in Southwest Ohio in December, 2020. It is believed a group of Mandarin Ducks had been placed in the pond a year earlier. All left and only this one reappeared. He was nicknamed "Mannie" and stayed in the pond for a couple of months with his Mallard girlfriend.

Was hoping to see something with web feet at Ninesprings Yeovil, early this morning , sadly no otters but these beautiful Mandarin that flew in were worth the early start.
i saw these beautiful creatures at a mountain lake in North Carolina.; not exactly where i expected to see such an incredible duck. When i found out they were Mandarin ducks my friend said 'They're on menus everywhere" and i got really sad. I had heard of Mandarin Duck, but i thought they meant the sauce was Mandarin. :-(
The mail Mandarin duck has the most elaborate and ornate plumage with distinctive long orange feathers on the side of his face, and orange sails on the back, the female is dull by comparison.
I don't actually like mandarin oranges, but was glad to find something that color for my Scavenger Hunt. Amazing how many colors exist in nature.
Taken at Bird World, Farnham. Male and female just prior to mating - a rather brief encounter when he nearly drowned her in his excitement !
