Image taken at Switherland Reservoir in Charnwood. I had never witnessed the Male Mandarin Courtship Display before and it was beautiful to see, the male extends his head up and down continuously while making a very soft call to his mate. Unfortunately the Female showed no interest at all in the Males attempt's to woo her.

he Mandarin Duck ranks as an extraordinarily beautiful, not to mention colorful, variety of duck. This unique animal now lists as Threatened in its endemic range. The primary reason for this remains habitat loss, due to the destruction of native forests. However, and in this instance thankfully, mankind introduced it to many other portions of the world.
This beauty took us about 20 minutes to find. Once we did, It was a chorus of shutters for a good hour and a half, at close range. There wasn't many areas to get on the ground to get that special pov. For this shot, I under exposed it 1.3 stops to darken the background. Using the new "Masking" tools in Lightroom, I was able to just bring out the duck, very easily.
There are various mutations of the Mandarin duck found in captivity, and they are widely regarded as the world's most beautiful duck. Mandarin duck is medium-sized duck and native of China and Japan.

One of a number of mandarin ducks seen at Cannop Ponds in the Forest of Dean the Friday before last when I met up with flickr members Rod Holbrook and Matt Scott. This handsome drake swam quite near to the waters edge and I was able to get some close up shots
The Mandarin is one of the most beautiful Ducks in the world, native to East Asia. It is closely related to the North American Wood Duck, the only other member of the genus Aix. Don't forget about the Mandarin Duck mysteriously appear in Central Park, no one knows where the Duck came from but today Bird Watchers are still trying to take pictures of this Beautiful Duck.
