Gig photography for my BTEC Final Major Project. (19-05-2017)

SHAUN RYDER: Born in Salford, 1962, frontman and founder member of the Happy Mondays, Shaun Ryder was the potty-mouthed poster boy for rock & roll excess in the late ’80s and early ’90s during the Madchester scene. The film 24 Hour Party People featured the (semi-fictional) story of Shaun Ryder's youth and the life of Happy Mondays whilst signed with Factory Records.

KEVIN CUMMINS: born in Withington, Manchester in 1953, is best known for photographing the Manchester music scene. A timeline that stretches from the burgeoning punk scene of the late 1970s, the emergence of bands such as Joy Division, The Stone Roses and The Smiths in the 1980s and through the 1990s, documenting the rise of the Happy Mondays, New Order and Oasis. Working as a photographer for NME, he produced some of the publications era defining front pages – most notably The Stone Roses ‘paint splatter’ shoot. Kevin was instrumental in establishing City Life, Manchester’s ‘what’s on’ guide and a founding contributor to The Face. Music fan’s fascination with the Manchester music scene over the decades has ensured Kevin’s work is perpetually exhibited.

BEZ (MARK BERRY): Born in Bolton in 1964, the son of a police detective inspector, he grew up in Salford, before moving to live with his grandparents in Wigan at the age of 16. Bez was invited to join the Happy Mondays by Shaun Ryder shortly after the band was formed. Famous for his maraca playing and bizarre dance style, he soon became the bands mascot.

ROWETTA IDAH: Born in Manchester in 1966, joined the Happy Mondays in 1990 and featured on their single 'Step On', two albums and three world tours. Rowetta re-entered the spotlight in 2004 when she auditioned for a place in the finals of The X Factor. Her performances on the show earned her rave reviews and she made it to the final four..

Music from Manchester.

I'm just going through a bit of a reading phase at the moment, for some reason. Read a line of something and then go off on a journey of discovery, one thing building on the next. Then go out and look for other info and locations to add to it.

Morrissey

Shaun Ryder

Tony Wilson.

We all grew up in the same general area, around the same time, give or take a few years.

So we went to a lot of the same places.

I grew up watching Tony on Granada Reports or whatever. He is not a musician but probably as important as anyone in the Manchester music scene of recent years. I found I could not put down 24 Hour Party People . At all. Some great lines in that book.

I'm not a prolific reader but I demolished all 457 pages of Moz's autobiography in three days. The first third seems to be written like a song or something - it flows really well.

Usual scenario, five minutes backstage to photograph the band for the magazine.

Technical bumph - which I rarely ever add:

Set up using 1 x SB800 behind @ 1/8 power naked onto wall,

SB800 to camera left @ 1/8 power and small diffuser

SB900 to camera right - full power through a mini fabric diffuser, 900 triggered by Bowens Pulsar and the 800s picking up in wireless slave mode.

Camera - manual 125 shutter and around f8 stopped down @ -3

I dream of the day I can actually gain more than five minutes with a band...:-)
