Manchester's Market Street is best avoided at most times. I was pleased to find a view of it that did not involve me walking down it...

Lever Street, Manchester

Another rainy day on the streets of Manchester, England. This picture was taken at around 2:10 pm in Albert Square. The Christmas Markets have been dismantled and the Square is being readied for the New Year’s Eve celebrations; but not by these pedestrians passing through.

A visit to Manchester with good friends on a very wet December day. Not too many outdoor shots though.

The Rochdale Canal through central Manchester, the eastern entrance to an underground section, originally just a road over bridge. This is part of the Cheshire Ring Canals, with a link to the Ashton Canal a few hundred yards / metres behind the camera and a meeting with the Bridgewater Canal around a mile ahead.

The first real proposals for the Rochdale Canal were in 1776, but it was not until 1804 that the works were completed, linking the Bridgewater Canal at Castlefield in Manchester to the Calder Navigation at Sowerby Bridge, this bridge dating from around then. After falling traffic the canal became increasingly derelict and a last through passage was probably in 1937.

However, it was not until 1965 that an application was made to formally close the canal, but objections by the Inland Waterways Association instead led to a revival, and the complete waterway was reopened in 2002.
