Originally opened in January 1914, the cinema was completely redesigned by G. Allen Fortesque and reopened November 17, 1930. Known then as the Deansgate Picture House it was one of the most popular cinemas in Manchester city-centre. By 1937 it was part of the H.D. Moorhouse Circuit. It was later operated by the Brennan’s Cinemas Ltd. chain.
In 1959 it was taken over by Associated British Cinemas (ABC) and extensively modernized in 1960 when a huge screen was installed and advertised locally as ‘Manchester’s most intimate Todd AO theatre’.
The auditorium seated 450 in the stalls and 250 in the balcony, and was decorated with twinkling star shaped lights.
In 1971, a second cinema opened, the 167 seat ABC 2, in the former cafe.
ABC was acquired by Cannon in 1986 and on August 9, 1990, both screens closed. After lying boarded up for a while the building was converted to a bar for the J.D. Wetherspoon chain of pubs, named The Moon Under Water. The pub still retains much of the former original cinema design.
A rare visit to Manchester for me today. I'm much happier in the hills but it was still worth going for a change of scenery and subject matter.
For four days over the August bank holiday weekend, the thousands that attended Manchester Pride 2023 welcomed every single moment of queer joy and celebration - even in the face of a little bit of rain.
Saturday’s Pride Parade (August 26th) - a staple feature of the Pride weekend - began in Deansgate at midday and featured more than 200 floats from organisations, charities, and businesses proudly waving the flag for LGBTQ+ rights and celebrating this year’s parade theme of ‘Queerly Beloved’, to mark 10 years of marriage equality in England and Wales.
As with every Manchester Pride before it, people took the opportunity to dress boldly with colourful and bright outfits. Top fashion trends over the weekend included Barbiecore, crop tops and, naturally, plenty of face glitter.

1V62 Manchester Piccadilly to Cardiff Central. Class 82 DVT (Driving Van Trailer) in Transport for Wales livery departs Piccadilly with a service to Cardiff Central. A Driving Van Trailer (DVT) is a British purpose-built control car railway vehicle that allows the driver to operate with a locomotive in push-pull formation from the opposite end of a train. A key benefit of operating trains with DVTs is the requirement for fewer locomotives; for example, a second locomotive would otherwise have to join at the other end of the train after arrival at terminal stations to lead the train's onward journey.
Manchester Pride festival is an incredible four-day celebration for LGBTQ+ life that takes place across the city every year over the August Bank Holiday weekend. It took place on 25-28 August 2023. There was no Manchester Pride parade in 2020 or 2021 due to the COVID pandemic, returning in 2022.
“This year, especially, there’s a lot of hate against the LGBTQ+ community, and people forget we exist. We have a right to live our lives and love who we love, what’s wrong with that? It’s still a protest, the young ones like it as a party but it is still a protest. But Pride is also still about celebrating and equality. It’s nice to see lots of smaller, more local Pride events that are lovely family days out where parents will bring their children. There’s a kind of event for every single age and gender.”
My preferred view of Manchester is from afar, stood in the countryside. City centre is about 10 miles away from where this was taken from.
