Saw bench @ Onslow Park steam rally 2015.
Thank you for taking the time to view, comment and fave my Photo, it’s greatly appreciated.
Derrick is transforming 5lbs of pork fat into lard. He's done this before, though not in this quantity, and is very excited about the whole thing. Homemade lard is "good lard", as opposed to the trans fat laden hydrogenated tub-o-lard on some supermarket shelves. Derrick will write up the whole process soon on www.obsessionwithfood.com
Cultural performers in the heart of ancient Pingyao.
Pingyao is considered one of China's best-preserved ancient walled towns. (From my limited travels around China, I wholeheartedly concur.)
Pingyao's history goes back about 2,700 years. Located about 90 km (55 miles) south of Taiyuan in Shanxi (山西) province, modern-day Pingyao has around 450,000 residents. The ancient town, is enclosed within a stone wall, 10 meters (31 feet) high and slightly more than 6 kilometers (3.6 miles) with 6 gates: north, lower east, upper east, south, upper west, and lower west, that was built in 1370.
Within these walls live 50,000 people. Also to be found are a number of religious institutions including temples - the Confucian temple with the oldest surviving building in Pingyao (Dacheng Hall from 1163 A.D.), the Taoist City God Temple, Taoist Qingxu Guan (temple), and a Catholic church, among others.
Besides the various religious sites, there are museums to the banking industry such as the Rishengchang Museum. (The first draft bank in China was located here in Pingyao), a few art museums, and -- centrally located -- a city tower on Nan Dajie.
Pingyao also has many guesthouses (I chose Harmony Guesthouse on Nan Dajie near the south gate and highly recommend it to anyone who goes to Pingyao), restaurants (western and local Pingyao cuisine), teahouses, bars, massage parlors, and souvenir shops.
By day, the panoramic view of Pingyao is slightly reminiscent of the imperial city scenes at the beginning of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (perhaps with a creative imagination). As evening comes, the red lanterns begin to dominate the landscape. Alleys, doorways, the main roads, and courtyards all find themselves awash in a red glow.
In short, Pingyao has plenty to offer by day or night. These images are just a small reflection, through my eyes, of Pingyao's charms.

This was kind of a test. If you carry a camera into a restaurant (or practically anywhere non-touristy) you'll attract attention. Hold up a telephone in front of the food and nobody looks twice.
I'm slowly adjusting to this world...

June 4: No trip to the Home Planet would be complete without stuffing ourselves at "The Big China". Normally we're not fans of the buffet, this one's a family tradition.

The Institue of Making turned 2 on Saturday and to celebrate we threw open our doors and celebrated metal in all its diversity. Crowds came along and explore metals that have memory, to see a jet engine turbine blade made from a single crystal, and discussed ethical gold with researcher Peter Oakley in the Materials Library. Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill was in the Library talking about his research, specialising in friction stirred mokume gane metals.
We had some 3D printed metal objects, participants had a go at raising copper into a bowl shape, making spoon from copper pipe, created wire sculpture with artist Helaina Sharpley and learnt the ancient technique of pewter casting with cuttlefish bone. Watched scientist Andres Tretiakov set fire to metals, creating sparks to see the beautiful colours metals emit. Listened to live performances from a UCL homegrown brass band named Dat Bass, who also gave a rare opportunity to have a go! There will also be the chance to taste metals.
