For the first time ever, we brought the Exploratorium booth at Maker Faire outdoors!

Maker Expo took place on Saturday, Sept. 10 at Kitchener City Hall. This diverse, annual event showcases makers, artists and organizations who create amazing things in celebration of the do-it-yourself spirit. Check out the Maker Expo website for more information: www.makerexpo.ca

Once I am happy with the piece, I will give it our makers mark.

Maker Battery is a late nineteenth coastal artillery battery in Cornwall that is typical ofbatteries reflecting the technological and political changes of the time. Constructed in 1887 to expand the capabilities of the nearby Grenville Battery, Maker was initially equipped with a single 12.5-inch Rifled Muzzle Loading (RML) gun. This was expanded 3 years later to three 12.5-inch RML guns. By 1900 these were outdated and outgunned armaments, and while a proposal for 9.2-inch BL guns was dismissed, in 1903 the battery's two northern emplacements were upgraded to the 6-inch BL Mk. VII. Enduring another 8 years the battery was disarmed in 1911 and never reutilised.

The three emplacements are in good condition, each with their associated subterranean magazines. The 12.5-inch RML emplacement retains its pivot, race and traversing arc.

Maker Battery is owned by a nearby estate and rented out to private tenants. This was a permission visit with the tenant who was on site.

The Portland Mini Maker Faire is presented by OMSI and Make: Magazine, and supported by ESCO. It celebrates the Maker movement and brings together Makers of all fields with the goal of supporting grassroots innovation in the community.

Museum of Contemporary Craft and PNCA had two activities at this year’s Mini Maker Faire. MoCC + PNCA’s Continuing Education department provided a hand’s on mask-making activity and participants learned what's coming up at the museum and saw what fun and making awaits them at the Museum or in a CE class.

PNCA’s make + think + code lab was on hand to provide a basic understanding of how 3D printing technology works. Utilizing 3Doodler pens, visitors made 3D printed objects by hand, enabling them to gain a new perspective into the blooming field of 3D Printing and fabrication. Photos by Sara Kaltwasser.

Maker's Mark hand dips their bottles. There are certain specs applied to the dipped wax, so to keep fatigue from setting in and thereby messing up the bottles, the employees rotate jobs every 30 minutes.
