A pattern-welded blade by Pete Mattila of Hobart.
This particular blade is one of a trio of such hand-forged pieces created by Pete, artist, designer and blacksmith.
Pattern-welded steel is often mistakenly referred to as 'Damascus steel' but there are notable differences in production techniques, chemical composition and metallurgy in a historical sense. Sufficient differences in fact to start whole wars on blade smithing forums so not going there... :-)
This particular blade is made from railway steel and another, higher carbon steel being forced together under extreme temperature and pressure - either by press or hammer.
The unique banding in this one-piece blade comes from the many layers being twisted very tightly together at the end of the welding process and when close to white hot. The blade shape has then been hammer forged out of the circular blank. The twisting is visible in the handle.
They are a very pretty blade after pickling in acid then strong coffee :-)

The butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker,
and all of them going to the fair.
The Dicken's Christmas Fair to be exact. It's a Victorian visual feast between now and Christmas at the Cow Palace in Daly City. It's well worth a visit if you're local.
This lady is technically a candle maker and not a candlestick maker, I guess.

Every year in January, in the days leading up to the festival of Uttarayan, the skies of Ahmedabad are filled with the merry cries of the kite-fliers chasing and cutting each other’s kites. The least celebrated, yet a crucial part of this are the manjha-makers, who make the kite string by coating it with ground glass with their bare hands. The lack of private workspaces has forced the string-maker onto the streets.
This picture captures the day and night-long toil of the thread-maker as he tirelessly plies his craft in a corner against the daily traffic of the city.
"Ah, it was a time of sharing, of remembering, building, adventuring, dreaming ... but above all, it was the time of my kind, the time of mask makers ... those for whom the art of creating great Kanohi Masks from Kanoka Disks was all that we lived for."
The red light effect is actually an LED tube rolled in some red sheets, complemented with a faint blue light behind his back.

Long exposure taken from a great spot at the Narrow Neck Peninsula in Blue Mountains. I loved the strange rock pattern in the foreground and loved the motion of the trees and clouds. To me the trees looked like a dream maker, weaving the fabric of the clouds and creating their motion towards me.
This plate is on a dynamo supplied by McClure & Whitfield for powering the projectors at the Brookfield Cinema in Poynton, Cheshire, in 1938. The translation - Mersey, I'm ready.
The Mersey Dynamo works of McClure & Whitfield appears to have originated in a foundry business called Cameron Pearson which was merged into McClure & Whitfield in 1892 and became one of the first electrical engineering companies in the world, manufacturing dynamos. McClure & Whitfield installed the first electrical lighting powered by one of their dynamos on the Embankment in 1897, it also supplied the navy through 2 world wars with steering and drive motors for submarines, surface ships and indeed for mulberry harbour. In 1946 the business partnership existing between David McClure and Robert Brotherton Whitfield dissolved but the business continued. The company still exists and is still a private company owned by the family trading as Piggott and Whitfield Ltd, based in the North-West and in the City of London, installing mechanical, electrical, control and data systems into commercial and industrial properties all over the UK and beyond.

i love it!! very easy to use. nothing fancy. it's simply a warmer with an on and off switch, a pink pot, a white pot, two lids and a strainer. that's all i need.

1. i made my own yoghurt culture using chillies placed at the bottom of the pink container and 110fah whole milk poured into the pink container just covering the chillies, placed the filled pink container in the yoghurt maker, replaced the lid and switched on flic.kr/p/2kzNqmg i left the milk and chillies to process for a few hours, until set

2. i removed and discarded the chillies from the set yoghurt culture (1) and gradually poured 110fah whole milk into the yoghurt culture in the pink container to about halfway up the container, gradually stirring to prevent lumps, placed the filled pink container in the yoghurt maker, replaced the lid and switched on flic.kr/p/2kA7gKN i left the blended milk to process for a few hours until set

3. when set, for the final time (2) i repeated the procedure by gradually pouring extra 110fah whole milk into the blended milk of procedure (2) this time to fill the pink container, stirring to prevent lumps, placed the filled pink container in the yoghurt maker, switched on and left it for a few hours, until set

4. i decided to strain the final set yoghurt of (3) though it can be eaten unstrained
the yoghurt maker is switched off. i poured the set yoghurt from the pink container into the meshed strainer and placed the filled mesh strainer inside the white container to collect the whey, the watery liquid, from the strained yoghurt and covered with the lid
every so often i removed the whey from the white container and then returned the yoghurt filled strainer into the white container to continue straining the yoghurt
once i was happy with the texture the strained yoghurt was ready.

by adding salt to the yoghurt in stage (3) and removing all the whey in the final stage (4) the set yoghurt would become creamy soft cheese

in the past to make the yoghurt i would have wrapped a lidded saucepan of warm milk in an electric blanket switched on to a low setting and safely placed both upstairs in a bedroom for hours.

that method worked well for me when learning yoghurt making but this yoghurt maker placed on the kitchen work surface quietly processing is a game changer. simple, fun, much quicker and very happy with the result :)
ps i'm not recommending any of these cookery adventures. they suit my taste. photographing to encourage myself to eat more healthily

Last saturday I visited a flea market and found this handmade lace collar which fits perfectly in my book The unknown maker ... happy days!
In Cairo, Egypt there is a whole road designated for the tent makers. These people are highly skilled and very artistic. We were amazed at the level of detail in these pieces as they are hand made. We ended up buying the brown reddish one in the middle of the image.. It now hangs in our house as a reminder of this trip.

I saw this steer out of the corner of my eye while driving by. I had to back up. Appears like he had got his head stuck in a fence and someone cut that section of the fence to free him. Why they did not cut the rest off his head is beyond me. Did not appear to bother him though.

Maker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies.
For awhile now I've had a mask maker version of Makuta built, but never got around to taking photos of him out of a lack of motivation. However finally got around to it.
I know this is likely a build seen many, many times before.
I will say this, the hammer does function, and I tried to make it a mix between the JTO version and 2015 animations version, which I think I accomplished well. I would one day like to replace the grey bits on the hammer with black, but don't have the spare cash right now to do so.

Also yes, that is Tahu's Chest plate, partially rubbed off. Thought the bit of red looked nice and reflected Makuta's Corruption.
One of the things that impressed me about the film props on display at the Harry Potter Studio Tour was the really minute detail on display. This mark was on an orrery prop–there's no way anyone would ever see this detail on screen, only the folks who made this, and perhaps an actor who was particularly attentive, would see it at all. It didn't need to be there, but it is.

Maker Faire is primarily designed to be forward-looking, showcasing makers who are exploring new forms and new technologies.
In this week’s art maker class with Natalina, we started with a bit of qi gong, then had a conversation in french about objects around us in our home and garden. We then switched to Arduino programming and learned how to make a servo motor move. She assembled the hardware, reviewed the servo code and updated it to try different speeds for the motor. She keeps getting more fluent in both French and Arduino — two languages she wasn’t very comfortable with before. I think these weekly lessons are helping, and I am really happy with her progress.
We also discussed our next steps for Violet’s Journey, the fairy tale video that we are creating with her art ducks — which we have turned into poetic robots. We reviewed our options for the backgrounds that the ducks will glide in front of, and decided to start by printing one of our photo backgrounds onto a large vinyl banner, then shooting some test scenes against that backdrop, to see if this type of physical compositing with printed scenes will work. We also talked about the need for ’skirts’ to cover the robot bases, and looked at different ways to give Violet rainbow-colored feathers, using illuminated fiber optic strands that just came in from China.
