Photos from the main board swaping process of two Maxtor HDDs. Those are two indentical 120GB drives (more than 6 years old) and the first one failed. A simple PCB swap and now the data are secured!

8:45AM: I've been working downstairs helping to catch-up on the terminal repairs. This is a freshy cleaned terminal waiting to be reassembled following the replacement of an exhaust fan. Only about a half hour till this one can be powered back up.

Fotos vom Eigenbau einer Switchbox für den Flugsimulator X-Plane. Es wurden zwei alte Joysticks ausgeschlachtet und die Tastenverbinder neu gelötet. Mit der Software FlyWithLua lassen sich dann die Funktionen innerhalb X-Plane umsetzen.

This being the "Poverty Spec" model, much of the functionality of its more expensive siblings has not been built onto the main PCB.

 

All models apparently share the same transport, and with it, the same design weakness of failing "disc eject" drive belts!

HME 2009, Day 1: Component Wall - MSI N275GTX Lightning

Fabrication of the Big Weird Cable that connects the clock's mainboard to the little display boards is underway! It involves a lot of this - attaching little socket pins to each wire and then stuffing them in plastic housings like the one on the right. I did that for the button cable too, but didn't think to take a picture at this stage.

 

I didn't show steps 1 and 2 for the Big Weird Cable since they're not all that photogenic. First, I cut a section of ribbon cable to length. Actually, a few different lengths, since sections of it need to reach different places. Step 2 was attaching an insulation-displacement connector to one end. That's the kind of connector that ribbon cables are meant to be used with, and they're really easy to install, especially if you have a vise handy.

 

This will all make more sense once it's done and I can photograph it in place.

Die Hardware eines Computers wird vom BIOS (Basic Input Output System) bzw. EFI (Firmware) und dem Betriebssystem (Windows, Linux, Mac OS, Unix) (Software) und den dazugehörigen Treibern (Software) gesteuert und verwaltet. Der Begriff Firmware bezeichnet hier Software die bereits in die Hardware integriert wurde z. B. das BIOS das aus kleinen Programmen zur Initialisierung und Steuerung der wichtigsten Hardware-Komponenten nötig ist.

 

Häufig ist Hardware mit einer FCC-Nummer versehen, die eine eindeutige Identifizierung des Herstellers erlaubt.
