The Garden Wall capped by Bishop’s Cap rises above Going-to-the-Sun Highway in Glacier National Park, Montana. The wall is a mountain landform called an arête which is a sharp ridge separating two cirques or glacial valleys. The term has it origin from an old French word which means fish backbone or fishbone. The Cliffs are formed by Middle Proterozoic, mildly metamorphosed sedimentary rocks between 1.6 and 0.8 billion years old. The rocks at the top of the ridge and that form the Bishop’s Cap are argillites, siltites; quuartzites and carbonates that geologist call the Snowslip Formation. The bulk of the ridge is madeup of thick beds of dolomite and limestone with thin shale and silt interbeds that belong to the Helena (also called Siyeh)) Formation.

So, the story goes that some giraffes from the zoo in Anchorage escaped several summers ago. They were only out for a couple months as the zoo didn't have enough folks to go find them, pandemic and all. Now folks are reporting some strange sightings, like the example above in my back yard...

A black & white version of the previous post.

A surprising start to the Train 925 season in the first week of daylight savings sees a decently madeup train running on time and the possibility of sun to the south.

A quick exit from the evening's planned appointment had me picking up Mr Jokertrekker for the first crack at 925 in six months. We immediately struck cloud but it cleared at Maheno and then took a chance on the Katiki to Shag Point coastline. We were pleasantly surprised to find clear skies and the train arrived promptly, just before sundown.

Might be a good season after all...

The old Gateway Western trackage thru Missouri has alot of neat stuff to shoot. The problem is the train traffic is light and normally nocturnal for the most part. On Wednesday, 6/02, many problems caused an outbound MVNKC train to be over 12 hours late leaving East St. Louis. That created a rare daylight train west of Mexico on Thursday. I was super glad to grab this shot at Marshall on the KCS Mexico Sub. This neat 1906 built Chicago and Alton Railroad depot was a shot I figured I would never get. After 2 days of messed up railroad with nothing to show for it, the KCS madeup for it on this chase!

With winter in full force, Iowa doesn't see alot of the newer AC locomotives. That stuff tends to stay on the busier mainlines for the AC/DP needs. This AC did make it out here to Iowa on X337 and now leads the daily Waterloo to Kirk Yard manifest train back east. I haven't had much luck with the "100 units" so I made the most of it today. Train is seen here leaning into the Winthrop curves as they fight the hogback grade about 30 miles east of Waterloo. The train is mainly madeup of grain which seems to be hoping right now which is causing alot of extras to be run. Heavy eastbound traffic will warrant a X338 to run later today.

This is Tree Monster.

I made him out of black pipe cleaners while choosing to stay indoors because of frigid temps.

I had tried making several backgrounds for this but decided to make an AI generated picture of scary twisted trees.

I used my laptop to do several shots.

The eyes are Lego bits and the Monster is holding a stick with Borax Crystals on it!

-19 this morning and there was a windchill.

Westbound empty sweet bran train rolls west on the Ottumwa Sub. The train is seen here working west from Galesburg towards the destination at Eddyville, IA, west of Ottumwa. The train is mainly madeup of unique retrofitted coal cars that have a cover to keep the distiller mash seal while in transit.

A M356 train has just departed Pokegama Yard near Superior, WI, for the next leg of the trip to Stevens Point. The train is ducking under the BNSF Lakes Sub at Saunders. Saunders is where alot of the coming and going between all railroads in this area is done. This train is madeup of stacks and autos bound for the Chicago and points east and is running in a standard 1x1 setup.

An extra section of the St. Paul train rolls north on the Marquette Sub. Mainly madeup of pipe flat empties, the train passes MP 134 and also is about to cross over the Upper Iowa River between Kains Siding and New Albin. The Marquette Sub was hoping this day with trains 681, 2-475, 680, 475, 812 all in daylight.

The Iowa Northern original roster was madeup of 12 GP38's. Since then they have added GP40's, F40's, Cats, and slug sets to their collectic roster. Here the South Crew is alittle old school as they have has 6 GP38's and a F40 as they pass thru Washburn enroute back to Waterloo.

The north end of the Black Hills Sub doesn't offer much for scenery or population. Along highway 212 the Belle Fourche Job pokes along at 10mph enroute to Rapid City. The train is pretty much madeup up of betonite clay from the customers at the end of the line at Colony. Rapid City is only about 65 miles from here, but it is a long ways from here as the job will travel many miles of 10 mph before barely getting to Rapid by their HOS at 3pm.

You have to give me some credit. I shot this within ten minutes, uploaded it to my mac, did the preliminary edit to it on Lightroom, saved into flash drive so I can finish it up in photoshop on my work lappie, all that within 15 minutes before I had to leave for the airport.

Speaking of which, I'm in Vietnam now where, to my horror, I have found that they started blocking facebook in the last week. I'm trying to keep busy but it's hard. I'm having withdrawal symptoms. I can't play bejeweled blitz. I can't update my page.

Thank goodness this will last only till Friday till I get home.

This was done for Pretty Pink Tuesday. I hadn't been participating so I thought there was finally something I can manage to pull together and actually upload on time. So, yay me.

A baretable train from Phoenix to Logistics Park is passing the ex-Santa Fe depot in Carrollton on the Marceline Sub. Even though the train has a "B" symbol, the train really madeup of all J.B.Hunt containers bound for LPC. Carrollton is located 65 miles east of KC and Amtrak service was discontinued here in 1979. The depot was built in 1917.

My favorite part of the week, Sunday afternoon 4:00 - 8:00, a 4-hour marathon of Dylan's Theme Time Radio Hour shows and I pile up and futz with pictures the whole time. Shameful self-indulgence....if not now, when?

One of the odd ball trains to transverse the Transcon main is these Eddyville, IA, Cargill sweet bran trains. The train are mainly madeup of retrofitted aluminum coal cars with covers on them. The cars carry wet corn gluten feed that is used in cattle feed in Texas. The feed is time sensitive due to its wetness base. Cargill plants in Iowa at Eddyville and Tara are the main plants for these type trains. Here one rolls pass the Marceline Depot on the way west towards KC and Texas.

It is the same season of the year,

We walked,

around the parkland,

singing our madeup songs.

It is the same day of the season,

We passed that tree,

hand in hand,

touching the feeling of beating heart.

It is the same time of the day,

We sat,

under that tree,

starting looking into each other's eyes.

It is the same second of the moment,

We closed our eyes,

letting our lips

be the guiding light........

The U703 picked up power at Manchester while meeting 2 eastbound trains. The head 2 NS units are off a U705 that spotted Dyersville. The U703 was madeup of the rear 2 CSX motors and the train. Seen here passing the Beth Siding between Winthrop and Masonville. As you can see by the rusted rails, there hasn't been a train in it for a long time. This old bridge too might be on its last leg too?

***September 11, 2018 the Beth siding was removed from service.

Leader is SD80MAC 7228, was the 1st SD80MAC built by EMD in 1995 as the EMDX 8000. Then this unit was in a trade between NS and CSX which the NS acquired 12 SD80MAC's from the CSXT for 12 SD40-2's from the NS. This unit has been numbered EMDX 8000, CR 4128, CSXT 812, CSXT 4602, and now NS 7228.

One of UP's perishable trains from Washington State makes the trip east on the Clinton Sub at sunset. The train is madeup of all ARMN mechanical refers and is heading for east coast points via interchange with the CSXT at Chicago, IL. Surprising this short train was in a 2x1 DP setup.

Waiting for the Mexican Day of The Dead to happen.

It was billed as starting at 12 noon and nothing happened for the first few hours !. Quite poorly planned, I couldn't be asked to hang around.

As big companies worry more about making money, the customer seems to get less service. Good customer service like this from the railroads is getting hard to find. The Santa Fe had a few stories over the years of running an extra train to get something madeup or moved quickly. Here the McCook, IL, to Oklahoma City, OK, vehicle train has 6 box cars for a train. Track speed well in hand as they work west on the Chilly Sub few miles outside of Galesburg. Had a "3" for a symbol, so I don't think it was shutdown type stuff, but it went either way!

This is my first effort at using makeup of this kind in a photo. The intention was to create something out of the ordinary and something a bit edgy. I've also tried to make the eyes look a bit steely. That's something I've seen in other photos and wanted to replicate.

My friend Wendy introduced me to Snapchat last week and I've been having a blast playing with it. Like she said it's been making her laugh, something she needs. I suspect we can all use some more humour in our lives at this time.
