The Temple of Aphaia (Greek: Ναός Αφαίας) or Afaea is located within a sanctuary complex dedicated to the goddess Aphaia. Formerly known as the Temple of Jupiter Panhellenius, the great Doric temple is now recognized as dedicated to the mother-goddess Aphaia. It was a favourite of the Neoclassical and Romantic artists such as J. M. W. Turner.
It stands on a c. 160 m peak on the eastern side of the island approximately 13 km east by road from the main port of Aegina island, which lies in the Saronic Gulf, Greece.
Aphaea (Greek: Ἀφαία, Aphaía) was a Greek goddess who was worshipped almost exclusively here. She originated as early as the 14th century BCE as a local deity associated with fertility and the agricultural cycle. Under the later Athenian hegemony she came to be identified with the goddesses Athena and Artemis and with the nymph Britomartis as well, by the 2nd century CE, the time of Pausanias:
On Aigina as one goes toward the mountain of Zeus, god of all the Hellenes, the sanctuary of Aphaia comes up, for whom Pindar composed an ode at the behest of the Aeginetans. The Cretans say (the myths about her are native to Crete) that Euboulos was the son of Kharmanor, who purified Apollo of the killing of the Python, and they say that Britomartis was the daughter of Zeus and Kharme (the daughter of this Euboulos). She enjoyed races and hunts and was particularly dear to Artemis. While fleeing from Minos, who lusted after her, she cast herself into nets cast for a catch of fish. Artemis made her a goddess, and not only the Cretans but also the Aeginetans revere her. The Aeginetans say that Britomartis showed herself to them on their island. Her epithet among the Aeginetans is Aphaia, and it is Diktynna of the Nets on Crete. Description of Greece 2.30.3

The story of the Red Thread of Fate above.
Maybe it's not a coincidence that I chose to upload this foto today (not knowing about the story) on our wedding anniversary and title it "The Red Thread" although there is a lot more iron to see.

View of the mansion at Nymans Gardens, West Sussex. You will have noticed that the frontal part of the building has been preserved as a ruin and that only one of the side wings is still occupied. This is a result of a fire in 1947, a calamity the owners, the Messel family, never really recovered from. In the early 1950s, the whole estate was acquired by the National Trust. The point of the estate had always been to create an alternative world of beauty - far away from noisy cities and dirty industries. The building may look medieval, but it was built in the first half of the 19th century. When the Messels (stock brokers from Germany who had made their fortune in Britain and, later, liaised with nobility) purchased the place in the 1890s, they followed this trajectory and turned the gardens into a horticultural paradise. Consequently, when the National Trust preserves the estate, it also preserves a dream.

My great-grandfather in my maternal side had two-colored eyes. It was very rare that he had one bright ocean blue and the other a medium light gray one. He was of Spanish descent. Family stories were told to us grandchildren that he had a third-eye and can see things ordinary normal folks cannot see. Superstitions I supposed...
"... Superstitions regarding eye colour are related to heterochromia, a rare condition that causes eyes to be different colours.
Some Native American cultures believe that people or animals (especially dogs) with different coloured eyes have the ability to see heaven and earth at the same time. This sounds like a blessing, but in the pagan traditions of Europe, having different coloured eyes was associated with witchcraft."

......It’s said that at the end of the rainbow, a leprechaun mines his gold from veins that pulse with a light no sun ever made. The treasure he extracts lies scattered carelessly across the blasted terrain—twisted stacks, half-melted coins, and small hills of raw gold pushed toward his ruined castle like offerings. The rutted, hidden track that leads to his crumbling keep winds through these mounds, half-swallowed by the shifting earth. He lives alone in the shadows, guarding his hoard with traps, whispers, and old, crawling curses. They say those who reach the rainbow’s end never leave whole—if they leave at all.
This Milky Way photo was taken close to a popular beach with hundreds of visitors and cars by day and yet having an excellent night sky after the onset of astronomical twilight. The foreground was illuminated by the rotating lighthouse beam a few hundred meters away, thus providing a means of light painting of the scene.
Some of the most beautiful stories of ancient times refer to the silvery band of the Milky Way - a celestial river comprised by the light of billions of stars, that has traveled for thousands of years to reach our eyes. This majestic arc of light is more clearly visible on summer nights, when our gaze is towards the center of the Milky Way, which lies at about 25 thousand light years away - the brightest part of the band just above the tree and to left of the “Dark Horse” silhouette.
This band is bisected by obscuring clouds of interstellar dust, thus forming the “Great Galactic Rift”. The interstellar gas and dust gave birth to everything else in the Universe, including us - we are all made of stardust after all.
My deepest thanks and warmest wishes to everyone for 2025 - stay healthy and keep looking up!

Wir waren an einem recht grauen Tag dort, man konnte sich gut vorstellen welche mythische Faszination von diesem Ort für unsere Vorfahren ausging.

But we have this hostility to the external world
Because of the superstition, the myth
The absolutely unfounded theory
That you yourself exist only inside your skin
Now I wanna propose another idea
You're not something that is the result of the Big Bang
Or the end of the process
You are still the process
You are the Big Bang
The original force of the Universe
Coming on as whoever you are
See when I meet you
I see not just what you define yourself as
This is so and so and this is so and so and this is so and so
I see everyone of you as the primordial energy of the Universe
Coming on at me in this particular way
And I know I'm that too.

Funerary figures are often surrounded by myths that say they accompany and protect the souls of the deceased in the afterlife. These figures symbolize the belief in life after death and the idea that they help the dead survive in the other world and fulfill their tasks.

Who says Pronghorn can't jump? That seems to be a myth out there, probably because of their preference for going under fences, rather than over. Well, here's proof that they can and do jump!
On my two most recent trips into our nearby national park, I've encountered herds of 100 or more pronghorn - the most I've seen in Grasslands since the brutal winter of 2010-11 nearly wiped them out. Here, a group of about 75 decided to cross the road in front of me, and to do so they had to get over or through a long patch of icy meltwater. Some splashed, some leaped; it was fun to watch.
Unfortunately the unseasonably warm sunshine that melted most of the snow compromised focus, and almost all my shots of leaping pronghorns were unsharp. You can see some heat shimmer in the background of this shot. Luckily I did come away with a couple of sharp ones.
