For Macro Mondays theme - Glaze. Detail of crystalline glaze from a piece in my ceramics collection.
Crystalline is a special effects glaze made primarily of particles of zinc oxide and silica. These two ingredients, along with others, are mixed with water and applied to the ceramic pot in a thick paste. While at peak temperature in the firing kiln (around 2350 degrees F), a chemical reaction takes place between the zinc oxide and the silica forming seed crystals from which the crystal will eventually mature. After the chemical reaction is stimulated, the kiln is cooled 200 degrees below the peak temperature. The temperature is then held for 5 hours to allow the crystals to grow to the desired size.
The crystalline glaze is white in color. Metallic pigments such as manganese dioxide, iron oxide, nickel oxide, cobalt carbonate, or copper carbonate as well as others, are added to create the wide color spectrum of the glaze.

Based in a image i take in Odivelas, in this case what take my attention was the perspective with the Umbrellas.
The strange ambiance is given by the contrast of the elements that seem to have nothing to do with each other, yet here seemed to result ... I think!

Three and four-masted, iron-hulled barques.
The word "windjammer" has a variety of associations, both nautical and not. In the late 19th century the term was pejorative, as used by the sailors aboard the new, faster steamships. "The deck hands on the liners contemptuously refer to [sailing vessels] as 'wind-jammers'."
A windjammer is the first iron-hulled commercial sailing ship with multiple masts that were square rigged, or fore-and-aft rigged, or a combination of the two. Wikipedia

Mystic Florist, Mystic CT. In all my yrs of photography, never been accosted for taking a photo, even in the streets of my hometown NYC. The dolt owner of Mystic Florist must of had a bad week, for he came storming out cursing, at me and my wife whom was several yards ahead. Told him I was just talking a photo of your lovely store front, as he continued to ramble on; I just had to rebuttal and advise that the streets are public. So sad
it is a beautiful store front, but as a proprietor, a horror, I told him... I am going to return in Sept when the Seaport has the tall ship sails full. To continue...
Final note to my Flickr friends, if ever in Mystic, CT it a beautiful picturesque town, with great restaurants, with the Famous Mystic Pizza and the Seaport is amazing. But definitely stop by Mystic florist and snap a shoot... It will be entertaining.

This movie has equal billing with Walker Bros for Walkers "unkown until now" major screen role as JC (thats Joan Crawford and not Jesus Christ!) in his remake entitled "Mildred Pierced" about a woman who eventually owns a chain of tattoo and piercing centres.

In September and October, the Mystic Whaler travels to Baltimore Maryland for three weeks of 3-day overnight sails and to participate in the Great Chesapeake Bay Schooner Race.
