I don't have an id. Location is in the forest in southwestern Virginia, USA.

I made it back from my trip to Texas. I took tons of photos and will be posting a few more in the coming days. It was great to get away, but it's good to be home. :-)

We went one day to a place called The Big Thicket. It was exactly that. All kinds of interesting things. Spent a few hours hiking around in it. Found this little *gem*.

Fistulina hepatica (beefsteak fungus, also known as beefsteak polypore or ox tongue) is an unusual bracket fungus classified in the Agaricales, that is commonly seen in Britain, but can be found in North America, Australia, North Africa, and the rest of Europe. As its name suggests, it looks remarkably similar to a slab of raw meat. It has been used as a meat substitute in the past, and can still be found in some French markets. It has a sour, slightly acidic taste. For eating it must be collected young and it may be tough and need long cooking.

It's the start of mushroom season.

I know nothing about mushrooms except how to saute the ones you buy in the grocery store. These are a result of our recent heavy rains, I'm guessing. My curious cat discovered them.

Found growing on a significantly decayed tree within the New Jersey Pinelands.

I am not very good at identifying mushrooms, so if you know the species please mention it in the comments!

It was early morning, the grass still wet from dew, and cold! But I knew if I didn't get out there, the squirrels would stampede over them!

Mushroom above ground level. They amaze me how the pop up after a dorment stage and wait for the right conditions to produce. Just beneath the earth the spores are always waiting to arise! to the occasion..
