Coastal Redwoods along the Bootjack trail

The trees are amazing here. That is my wife hiking all the way up from the main park to the Panoramic Trail (a nice little hike). So worth it.

The green leaves of Muir Woods

Muir Beach in California. Went here with a couple friends and explored for a while. Really beautiful place.

Muir Beach is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area and located in the small town of Muir Beach, California. Located on the Pacific Coast three miles west of Muir Woods, Muir Beach is a quiet cove, beach, and lagoon favored by locals. Redwood Creek flows down to the ocean here, but slows down near the beach forming a lagoon, some ponds, and wetlands. This beautiful area is full of wildlife: Monarch butterflies in the pine trees, salmon in Redwood Creek, frogs in the pasture, fox, birds, deer, coyote...

Muir Woods National Monument, Muir County, California, USA

These trees are known as coastal or Californian redwoods and are a variety of the Sequoia genus, growing along the Pacific coast of the USA. They are the tallest living trees on the planet, and can grow up to 379 feet. This photograph was taken in August 2015 and features a cluster of the trees in the old-growth coastal redwood forest at Muir Woods National Monument in Marin County, California. The area was saved from logging by William and Elizabeth Kent and became a National Monument in 1908.

Stream in Muir Woods

A small park in Martinez, CA, in the outer Bay Area. John Muir lived here with this parents-in-law and inherited the fruit ranch after their death. The ranch grew a range of fruits and nuts for sale. Remnant plantings still produce. National Park Service manages it.The Victorian house in which Muir lived when he wasn't roaming is restored for tours. The historic adobe house on the property (remnant of early Spanish settlement) is closed for repairs, Normally it’s open to view. .

Until quite recently, going to Muir Woods, which is near our home, was simple: just hop in you car and go. Now, however, reservations are required, parking is severely limited, shuttle buses are strongly recommended, and quite frankly, since we've often gone there in the past, it simply isn't worth it to go through the hassle of going there again. Besides, it has become crowded, and what used to be a quiet, inspiring experience has been replaced by chatting, iPhone-wielding tourists, many of whom appear to hardly notice the magnificent redwood trees.

Anyway, Happy Fenced Friday...

Muir Lake just north of Spruce Grove, Alberta is one of many small lakes that can be breathtaking early morning or evening. This shot was taken 5 minutes after the sun had set.

It’s #MuirMonday and with this picture I feel like I’ve finally been able to capture Muir Woods in a true-to-eye sense: sunbeams, the towering trees, deep shadows, brilliant green and copper redwood color palette, and the blue Californian sky, shining beyond. Muir Woods is notoriously hard to photograph but apparently making a vertical panorama will do the trick.

As crowded as it was on a no-admission Saturday at the Muir Woods, patience helped me with this image. I just had to wait for a gap between all the visitors. This probably wouldn't have been possible later in the day... tour busses were rolling in just as I was leaving.

We are standing on the Muir Beach Overlook, looking south along the Marin County coast towards the Golden Gate strait, the entrance to San Francisco Bay. The distinctive Sutro Tower atop Mount Sutro rises above the city of San Francisco.
