Out shooting a Muir creek last Thursday with Johnny Trevor. Taking advantage of the dark skies and nice weather. Lost some gear wasted some fireworks but still got some shots. Lighgtpainting single exposure 30 second. The sky is enhanced in lightroom.

After holding for a westbound coal train, MRL R-LAUBOZ1-30 returns east with plenty of power up front. All but the first two engines would get set off at Livingston, but they provided an extra push to bring the train up the west slope of Bozeman Pass. Typically the eastward return of the Laurel-Bozeman job runs under the cover of darkness, but their crew expired the night before, allowing these daylight views on the pass.

BNSF M-LAUHEL1-02A, pulled by a pair of Montana Rail Link's SD70ACe Locomotives, works uphill at Muir toward the summit of Bozeman Pass with 1,156 ft. of train.
Had to make a parking reservation to walk in the Muir Woods coastal redwoods a bit north of San Francisco, but it was worth it.

The Yosemite National Park's John Muir Trail in California. It leads to Vernal Falls and beyond. It's a great park with lots of trails for different skill levels. Do your research before going. It's a park and there is wildlife.

Last stop on my tour of southern Vancouver Island is one of my all time favourite locations: Muir Beach, past Sooke on the West Coast Road. For three years I rented a big cabin in the woods, five minutes from this location, and visited countless times.
On this splendid December morning, I was on the beach for sunrise over Orveas Bay. It was glorious, and that's all I can say about it. The distant mountains are across the Strait of Juan de Fuca, on Washington's Olympic Peninsula. A couple km of sandy beach was at my back. Over the next two days I will offer a glimpse of this extraordinary place, then it's on to a new image set.

Just another lovely quiet scene from the John Muir wilderness of California. We backpacked up here and stayed for several nights in this incredible location overlooking this idyllic lake.
If you've never been to Muir Woods in California, I can wholeheartedly recommend it.
We went in December and the weather was perfect.
It is north of San Francisco.
If you do go, make parking reservations way in advance. There is limited parking. Or you can take a shuttle bus.
Bring your camera and a tripod because there isn't much light there due to the dense canopy.
An eastbound BNSF grain train rolls down Bozeman Pass at 'Muir' on MRL's 2nd Subdivision during a heavy summer snowstorm.
I kept an eye on the weather front the other evening and there was a nice clearing moving north west so I headed out back to this set of rocks I'd reccied a few weeks ago, overlooking Stockie Muir and in the distance, Lock Lomond and the Trossach mountains. Luckily the sun broke through about 15 minutes before sunset to give some stunning light and a few rainbows!
I hadn't planned to chase the Bozeman turn today, and I definitely did not plan on following them as far as Muir... But at some point along the chase I ran some extremely guestimated math and figured they'd still be in daylight climbing Bozeman Pass.
I arrived at Muir to see the sun was just about rubbing the peak behind me, guessing again I had about 15 minutes of daylight before the station sign (something I wanted to incorporate into the shot) would be shadowed over. Additionally, I didn't know how far ahead of the train I was, I just banked on them making a quick run up the mountain.
With roughly 10 minutes of direct sunlight left, the train rounded the curve and was quickly in frame.
Years of watching videos, enjoying photos of old school MRL power climbing the pass, and never did I think I'd get to be out in Montana working for MRL. Not to mention, never would I have thought I would be lucky enough to see, even just these two, SD45s climb to the summit. Factor in the down-to-the-minute timing with the sun and it made for a little bit of magic on the side of Bozeman Pass.

John Muir Wilderness from a few years back, scouting shot for one of my favorite sunset images. Hoping they open the Inyo Forest for some late season hiking this year . . .
Along Hwy 14 and on Vancouver Island, BC are numerous pullouts, and various delights to see. This one, shows the Muir Creek with old growth forest area. It was a rainy day but the river was flowing with great ferocity. Most interesting was the color of the water itself. Coming off the slight waterfalls, it turned a distinctive shade of lime green which added to the otherwise lack of color in this landscape image.
