The Rock, GA (Upson County). Copyright 2006 D. Nelson
Ms. Betsy Starling, the postmaster of The Rock, was kind enough to pose for this picture and also gave me a breakdown of the history of the town. The post office used to be adjacent to a private residence across the street, but was moved when the then postmaster/home owner retired. In the back you see the old post office boxes - they are no longer used as new, more uniform looking aluminum ones were installed, but The Rock was able to hang on to them and together with what used to be a teller window, they function as a partition.
We were both wondering if Ms. Starling is the oldest postmaster in the country. I am not sure of her exact age, but it is advanced. She was fairly sure there was a postmaster older than her in another state.
