After a disappointing couple of days in Bryce Canyon, I moved on to my next location which was to be Kodachrome Basin National Park, which is located between Bryce Canyon and the Grand Staircase Escalante Region of Utah. I found a great site in the primitive campground at the back of the park, I think I like this campground better than the front campground because of the dirt road leading in to it. This prevents most RV's from attempting access and is a much more serene environment, although the front campground has free showers but they can be used by all visitors, so I seized the opportunity. :)

This is the Bryce View Campground and is named so because its view overlooks not just Kodachrome Basin but also Bryce Canyon, which can be seen here off in the distance with a spectacular sunset in progress. Wouldn't you know it, the day I leave Bryce the sky explodes over it. Bah!! I guess a fourth trip to Bryce is on the itinerary in the future. "If at first you don't succeed try try again" is what I was taught. :)

I found this tree just off of the dirt road that leads back to some of the more remote formations in the park. It sits perched atop a red stone formation and stands only waist high. I tried to get a POV and composition that portrayed this tree as much bigger and an alternate composition capitalizing on it's stunted nature. I ended up liking this one better.

I am considering this to be an FDR image "Full Dynamic Range." Not an HDR image. HDR is usually associated with software designed specifically for that purpose. The problem with these software solutions is that by the time you get something you like, they introduce strong haloing properties and unpleasant artifacts which give it a fake unnatural look. By blending exposures manually you control what aspects of each exposure will be included in your final result, leading ultimately to a "Full Dynamic Range" image. Maybe we can start differentiating the two different types of processes. Have you ever had someone ask "Is it HDR" I like being able to say "NO", then again, if they have to ask then I'm getting close to real looking FDR photos.

The Canadian Tiger Swallowtail is found in most provinces and territories in Canada, as its name implies. Its range extends north of the Arctic Circle in the Yukon, and to Churchill in Manitoba, Little Shagamu River in Ontario, and to Schefferville in Quebec. It does not occur in southern British Columbia, being replaced there by the western tiger swallowtail, Papilio rutulus, or in southwestern Ontario, approximately west of Toronto, where it is replaced by the eastern tiger swallowtail. It has not been reported from Labrador, but has been seen in western Newfoundland. It is seen in the northern third of the United States. Within this range, it is a very common and well-known butterfly, even more so around woodland edges. It is one of the most common puddling species and often hundreds will gather at a single puddle. (Wikipedia)

Butterflies seem to be in short supply this year so I was pleased to find this swallowtail feeding on the nectar of the honeysuckle.

Hibiscus In temperate zones, probably the most commonly grown ornamental species is Hibiscus syriacus, the common garden hibiscus, also known in some areas as the "Rose of Althea" or "Rose of Sharon" (but not to be confused with the unrelated Hypericum calycinum, also called "Rose of Sharon"). In tropical and subtropical areas, the Chinese hibiscus (H. rosa-sinensis), with its many showy hybrids, is the most popular hibiscus.

The most common Parakeet found in our state amongst the 4 species. They are found pretty much everywhere - in the cities, jungles, countryside and sometimes even near temples and tall buildings adjacent to trees.

The place we visited had several fruiting trees and when the monkeys had their fill of the fruits, the birds come up to grab whatever is left. These parakeets were the last of the birds - but they didn't seem to like this fruit very much. So they left quickly.

I spent most of yesterday looking for some autumn color to shoot. Well, that's not quite right. I didn't have to look very far to find something to shoot because right now here in western Newfoundland it looks like we're living on top of a giant pumpkin! Seriously.

What I meant was, I was looking for something different ... or somewhere different ... I hadn't shot before. And, I did manage to do that, but I still couldn't resist going back and shooting some of the old familiar stuff as well ... but, tried to shoot it from a slightly different point of view.

Like most of Galapagos, Sombrero Chino (Chinese Hat) is volcanic in origin. The exploration path starts with a gorgeous beach, bright red Sally Lightfoot crabs and marine iguanas. The path goes past a colony of endemic Galapagos sea lions before passing a lava field: look for the lava cactus growing in the cracks. On the beach, keep your eyes open for the American Oystercatcher, a wading bird with a distinctive orange beak. On the trail, you may see lava lizards.

This is the most popular subject to photograph on the Isle of Skye and understandably so. The rock stacks making up the structure - the old man, the needle and the other features that escape me - are like something out of Lord of the Rings. You wouldn’t be all that surprised to see a dragon flying overhead with all that gothic looking geology going on around you.

The day I was there was wet, cold and very windy making it difficult conditions to catch any shots never mind taking the time to get some HDR exposures. I had timed the trip to be there for sundown but the clouds were so thick and low that there no chance of getting any nice colour. So here we have a colour image of the stormy weather conditions on the Storr mountain ridge. Maybe I’ll get better luck on the weather next time.

This is the most common antelope of the bushveld regions of South Africa. The Impala is preyed upon by most of the large carnivores, and should one of them spot danger, it will snort an alarm and the whole herd will scatter. It is one of the treats offered by nature to see this antelope perform their incredible 3 metre high and 12 metre long leaps.

Most mornings in the San Francisco Bay area, an epic battle is being fought, over and over again: The sun fights the fog for dominance. Especially during Winter and Spring, it's not at all a given who will win, even though the odds are on the side of the sun.

This is a scene from one of the battlegrounds of this fight–shot in the morning hours, up in the hills of Berkeley, California.

Barn Owl - Tyto Alba

Like most owls, the barn owl is nocturnal, relying on its acute sense of hearing when hunting in complete darkness. It often becomes active shortly before dusk and can sometimes be seen during the day when relocating from one roosting site to another. In Britain, on various Pacific Islands and perhaps elsewhere, it sometimes hunts by day. This practice may depend on whether the owl is mobbed by other birds if it emerges in daylight. However, in Britain, some birds continue to hunt by day even when mobbed by such birds as magpies, rooks and black-headed gulls, such diurnal activity possibly occurring when the previous night has been wet making hunting difficult. By contrast, in southern Europe and the tropics, the birds seem to be almost exclusively nocturnal, with the few birds that hunt by day being severely mobbed.

Barn owls are not particularly territorial but have a home range inside which they forage. For males in Scotland this has a radius of about 1 km (0.6 mi) from the nest site and an average size of about 300 hectares. Female home ranges largely coincide with that of their mates. Outside the breeding season, males and females usually roost separately, each one having about three favoured sites in which to conceal themselves by day, and which are also visited for short periods during the night. Roosting sites include holes in trees, fissures in cliffs, disused buildings, chimneys and haysheds and are often small in comparison to nesting sites. As the breeding season approaches, the birds move back to the vicinity of the chosen nest to roost.

Once a pair-bond has been formed, the male will make short flights at dusk around the nesting and roosting sites and then longer circuits to establish a home range. When he is later joined by the female, there is much chasing, turning and twisting in flight, and frequent screeches, the male's being high-pitched and tremulous and the female's lower and harsher. At later stages of courtship, the male emerges at dusk, climbs high into the sky and then swoops back to the vicinity of the female at speed. He then sets off to forage. The female meanwhile sits in an eminent position and preens, returning to the nest a minute or two before the male arrives with food for her. Such feeding behaviour of the female by the male is common, helps build the pair-bond and increases the female's fitness before egg-laying commences.

Barn owls are cavity nesters. They choose holes in trees, fissures in cliff faces, the large nests of other birds such as the hamerkop (Scopus umbretta) and, particularly in Europe and North America, old buildings such as farm sheds and church towers. Buildings are preferred to trees in wetter climates in the British Isles and provide better protection for fledglings from inclement weather. Trees tend to be in open habitats rather than in the middle of woodland and nest holes tend to be higher in North America than in Europe because of possible predation.

This bird has suffered declines through the 20th century and is thought to have been adversely affected by organochlorine pesticides such as DDT in the 1950s and '60s.

Nocturnal birds like the barn owl are poorly monitored by the Breeding Bird Survey and, subject to this caveat, numbers may have increased between 1995-2008.

Barn owls are a Schedule 1 and 9 species.

This is the most magical photo I brought back from my Madeira trip. A little treasure for me, because being able to capture such a fleeting moment is something very special.

Originally we had planned something completely different for this day. And we were on the mountains on the opposite side. As you can already guess from here, the visibility was rather low there (it was basically close to zero). However, since we had once worked our way up what felt like 10,000 switchbacks on a very narrow and steep road (half of them in the fog and rain), we looked for an alternative nearby. This was then the valley of the nuns, a beautiful place in the middle of the mountains,

Opposite the small church, which can be seen at the front edge of the village, we had a coffee and the owner encouraged us to drive up here.

Since it was still raining on the other side of the valley, but the sun was just breaking through the cloud cover here, this fantastic rainbow suddenly appeared while we were still hiking.

You can probably imagine the rush that broke out for me to get the camera out of my backpack in time. This is one of two photos I was able to take, after which the rainbow was gone.

As one of the most iconic images of Scotland, Eilean Donan is recognised all around the world. Situated on an island at the point where three great sea lochs meet, and surrounded by some majestic scenery, it is little wonder that the castle is now one of the most visited and important attractions in the Scottish highlands.

Although first inhabited around the 6th century, the first fortified castle was built in the mid 13th century and stood guard over the lands of Kintail. Since then, at least four different versions of the castle have been built and re-built as the feudal history of Scotland unfolded through the centuries.

Partially destroyed in a Jacobite uprising in 1719, Eilean Donan lay in ruins for the best part of 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John MacRae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911 and proceeded to restore the castle to its former glory. After 20 years of toil and labour the castle was re-opened in 1932.

Since most migrant waterfowl have moved north of Iowa now, chances are very good that this trumpeter swan pair will be nesting right here at Cardinal Marsh this year. This would be the fourth year in row for trumpeter swans to stay here and nest for the summer following a long and sad 150 year hiatus as they were hunted to the brink of extinction during the pioneer era.

The most aggressive kingfisher in our region. What happens when this bird and a pesky Police bird - the Black Drongo fight for territory?

The Drongo is much taller than this bird, but the Kingfisher is a much stronger predator. The Drongo is a more agile flier, but Kingfisher is a much stronger flier i.e. it can hold large prey with its powerful beak and fly. Meaning it can also hurt the Drongo. The Drongo is a successful irritant that has a rich history of annoying big raptors, while the Kingfisher is known to keep birds of its size and smaller away from its territory.

Both the birds demonstrated their techniques with the Drongo repeatedly making smart passes around the Kingfisher a couple of times - too close probably. The Kingfisher made this big wide wing display few times to scare him off unsuccessfully. Finally it had enough and chased the Drongo away from this thorny bush into a clump of trees.
