Towards the end of the gig, the mental fans started rushing the stage, including many pathetic, middle aged morons, all of whom were wearing the same "Je Suis Morrissey" tshirt. One fat scottish man asked me for a footie to get on stage. When I refused he asked the guy infront of him, who was only too happy to help. After trying to squeeze past the speakers, which he nearly toppled over, he was ordered down by security. Meanwhile, another member of security was being assaulted by an angry fan, who was quite indignant at not being allowed to grope Morrissey. These were not the usual massive bald security staff; this was the Edinburgh Playhouse, which has probably never seen such chaos. One guy was being led out of the area by a member of staff, limping on one foot. All of those scumbags who were causing the riot are responsible for that guy's injury. They had no concern for other people's safety, they just wanted to touch this middle aged singer for some sort of sad sense of achievement. One man says "I've seen him 10 times and this is the first time I've touched him!", to the approval of his Neanderthal mate. It was absolutely unreal. Of course the attention-starved Morrissey was only encouraging this by pulling these idiots on stage. I guess he wanted his personal security staff to really earn their keep. Four guys nearly charge into me, desperately clutching Morrissey's discarded, sweaty shirt, all of whom were holding on for dear life. After about a minute of jostling, the most educated of the pack concluded that they must divide up the shirt so that everyone can have a piece. I imagine this was how the first laws were originally created out of what Rawls called the 'state of nature'. It was honestly like something from Lord of the Flies. The fact that these people are soon dispersed into the general population, going back to their jobs and being indistinguishable from normal people, is quite frightening. Get a life people. Rant Over.

"The Smiths are the worlds greatest group."

A bold proclamation!

And arguably correct. Maybe not at that moment, but they would soon claim that crown. Who else was there? U2 had sold their soul for the yankee dollar, REM still hadn't got out of the States, Echo and the Bunnymen were beginning to fray at the edges and Simple Minds were becomming bloated.

Signed reverse of ticket stub by Morrissey of The Smiths. The poor hand writing was because he signed it standing up.

This was from the SFX, Dublin, first of two nights that they would play on their debut album tour (not their first Irish gig - I was at that in Trinity College 9 December 1983), Friday, 18 May 1984. Number 036, costing £6.00. That's the basic facts out of the way. They were touring a slightly underwhelming debut album (I was bitterly disappointed when it came out, having championed them previosly), albeit with some earthshatering singles and hidden away was some deep and meaningful melacholic tunes.

But they were relaxed and beginning to get on top of their game.. Yada, yada... it was obvious that they were destined for greatness. Shortly after, in fact less than a month, they went into the studio and recorded How Soon Is Now and became the default cool teenage idol group. Met up with them afterwards, backstage where they were very relaxed and open. I reckon this was their happiest time, they were on the up and there was no financial or inter-band squabbles.

See what the Johnny Marr wrote on my other ticket stub.

This rather unusual fronted house in South Manchester is where the old girlfriend of The Smith's ex-lead singer Morrissey used to live. No doubt he stayed over a night or two back in the 80's.
