155 MM HOWITZER
"SCHNEIDER" M1917 A1
FRANCE, USA WW I, WW II
Due to a shortage of American medium and heavy artillery in World War I, large numbers were purchased, particularly from the French. This Schneider piece became the M1918 upon production in America. The carriage was modified at Rock Arsenal for high speed transport, becoming the M1917A4.
The weapon saw active service in both world wars. The last shot of World War I is said to have been fired by a 155 mm howitzer (Calamity Jane) by the 11th Field Artillery.
