The woman who I hired to wash my clothes with her daughter in Nossa Senhora da Glória, Sergipe, Brazil.

At first, she had to carry my clothes a mile outside of town to wash them at a dam. Carrying them back to her home was more difficult because they were wet. She hung them in her yard to dry, then used an iron made of iron ---very heavy and filled with hot coals.

Once I moved to where I was able to collect rainwater from my tiled roof into a "cisterna" (cleaner water than in the dam) she washed my clothes in my back yard and hung them there. Later her daughter collected the dry clothes for her mother to iron.

The ceramic roof tiles were laid in alternating rows (convex, concave) to drain the water which flowed into metal gutters (see photo: www.flickr.com/photos/cj_proartz/15281500989/in/photolist...) which directed the water into a "cisterna" which was made of concrete. It was a cube shape with sides of about 10 feet, about 7 feet below the ground level and about 3 feet above the ground. I used a bucket on a rope to pull the water up. During about 6 months of rain, the cisterna would fill to overflowing. During 6 months of dry weather, the water level would get very low. For the 2 years I lived there, we had plenty of rain, but there have been periods in that region when there was no rain for 1-2 years.

The break in the concrete (lower left) is where water drained from my kitchen sink and my shower room into the back yard. I had no running water, so had to carry water from the "cisterna" into the house. I also had to heat water on a stove fueled by a propane tank to wash dishes and bathe. (Most of my neighbors used wood-burning stoves, but wood was rather scarce in that semi-arid region.) I boiled all water for drinking or cooking for 20 minutes, then poured it into a water filter. I also kept a bucket of water to which I added disinfectant in the outhouse to pour into the "toilet" which was basically a concrete cube with an oval hole that led to a septic tank.

Living without electricity and running water for two years and having to boil and filter water for consumption (even from the relatively clean cisterna) certainly made me appreciate what most take for granted.

I returned to Glória in 2011. There is now full-time electricity, running water, a sewage system, a cell tower, a college, hospital, and other conveniences ---the town has progressed into a modern city, but there are still horses and donkeys in the streets, along with a zillion motorbikes.

Yet, sometimes I am nostalgic for the simple life I lived there, even without modern amenities. The Brazilian people are so warm and hospitable, that their welcoming spirit overcame the inconveniences.

the "wonderful blue in the glass" are flames from melting sugar with burning alcohol. And at 70+ % alcohol in Absinth, it can easily spare some for the flames :)

Happy day my tree!.

When one this sentence into German translate wanted, could one the fact exploit, that the word order and the punctuation already with the German conventions agree.

Thank you.
