A few minutes before a huge storm broke out, T448p-145 had to bring a set of empties from the spoil tip station Knurów Zwałowisko to the coal mine "Budryk" in Ornontowice. Here the little train is aproaching the border of the village of Ornontowice...

yes, you read that right, a village! Despite having a population of over 6000 people, a large coal mine and very modern infrastructure, it (or they, as the name in Polish is plural ;P) is not classified as a town/city, because it doesn't have the city rights.

I have finally finished my course and would like to share my final submissions with you. This is the first inspired by Andy Warhol.

1.Fifteen.

“In the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes.”

(Andy Warhol)

In today’s world of social media platforms, people are searching for their 15 minutes of fame. Celebrities seem to be the new gods. They are lauded and applauded. They are made larger than life and are given the gloss of perfection.

I chose to create a pop art photo of a singer song writer who could have achieved his 15 minutes of fame. I thought that by using vibrant colours and the same image, on vibrantly coloured backgrounds and applying different blendes, I could create a shot suggestive of the exaltation given to celebrities.

Fifteen minutes later than the previous photo, a rather similar train passed by in the same direction - so it's a bit of a 'spot the seven differences' game (Hint: this one conveys covered wagons in front). This time, the loco is ВЛ80C (VL80S) no. 2476 and it is positioned the other way around. Also, this time I had the presence of mind to count the wagons, to give you an impression of the considerable length. 63 wagons they were... Baxmalsoy, 28-05-2021.

11 minutes of serenitiy, watching the waves. Taming the ocean.

I have always liked long exposures for the silky water and stretchy clouds. To me it always conveys a sense of calm and peacefulness.

The Lee Big Stopper has been my favourite filter and I always find an excuse to bring it out. Recently though I bought a Firecrest 16 stop filter.

One thing you quickly realise is that 16 stops is a lot! 1/125 unfiltered translates to 8 minutes!

In this case, just after sunrise but still overcast I decided to give it a go. 16 minutes was the calculated exposure, but I cut it back to 11 minutes - partly because everyone was leaving for breakfast and partly because the light was improving all the time and I decided to cut a bit more than half stop off.

Still more than enough to calm the ocean.

The final minutes before the sun sets beneath the horizon of the Pacific Ocean in California. Surfers staying to catch the last rides of the day, I'm looking down from a cliffside view in north San Diego country saying amen and thank you as the mother father sun keeps keeps its golden eye on Mother Earth.

Vang-Vieng, the lost paradise

Vang-Vieng (Laos) - Photo taken a good 15 minutes walk from the city center.

This city, now populated by 20,000 inhabitants, was considered until the mid-1990s as one of the paradises of earth. Unfortunately, I did not stay there on my first trip in the 1990s.

From earthly paradise, Vang-Vieng has turned into hell in less than two years, under the onslaught of Chinese and Vietnamese investors, attracted by a dream setting around the Nam-Song river, surrounded by majestic limestone mountains dotted with caves more or less sacred.

Mass tourism swept over this pretty valley overnight, which for several years had attracted junkies around the world. As a result, this place has become infrequent with a high crime rate.

Vang-Vieng was quickly renamed "the cancer of tourism" in the early 2000s. But in 2012, after having profited greatly from corruption, the Laotian government was forced to put an end to this debauchery, which was hardly compatible with the image he wanted to give of the country.

Today, the region has once again become more peaceful and secure. It is still a hotspot for tourism with its backlashing quads, disturbing the tranquility of the surrounding countryside. But it is possible to practice more environmentally friendly tourism by exploring the region on foot or by bicycle.

This valley is near Hanksville at an undisclosed location. We made it here for Sunrise, arriving 45 minutes before sunrise. This image was taken 15 minutes after sunrise as the clouds allowed some color to break through. Shortly after this photo, rain came and our guides urged us to pack up to head back as the hike-in traversed several with narrow paths and steep drop-offs on both sides. These areas proved to be extremely muddy on the way back. In fact, a hiker was severly injured the following day due to the slippery terrain and height of the trails. We needed to climb up the steep traverses on all fours as the rain grew in intensity as our traction washed away. In the end, we were covered in mud. Because we all made it safely, we can laugh and remember the images we each captured.

For the last few years the Swanage Railway has completed its operational year with a ‘winter warmup’ event, where the railway runs an intensive service using its own locomotive fleet over a weekend. This image was captured during the January 2024 event. The weather for the 2025 event in the first week of January was less kind, with no sunshine over the weekend.

On the first full day of my Autumn In The Alps trip I had a tough decision to make. Do I sit around my hotel in Munich and hope that British Airways calls me with news of my missing bag...or do I head out with the clothes on my back and live like a hobo for the next 8 days? After spending 20 minutes getting nowhere with the nice young lady from India, my decision was clear. In spite of British Airways' best attempts to derail my trip (bumping me to a later flight, losing my bag and then refusing to give me any information for four days) I ignored the fact that I had no luggage and was now missing the big tripod, and headed to the Dolomites with nothing but my camera gear and the back up Benro that I had brought for just such an occasion.

By late afternoon, I was pulling into the Val di Funes and setting off for St John's Chapel. The few hours that I spent in this valley will stay with me for the rest of my life. After shooting around St John's, I headed up the steep hillside behind me and found another 20 or so photographers setting up for the sunset. Not wanting to be part of the pack, I headed further up the hill, and then just sat....and soaked it all in. The clinking of the cow bells. The church bells ringing out over the valley for Sunday evening mass. I dodged a couple of tractors driven by stern looking weather beaten farmers who seemed to roll their eyes at the small army of photographers. I couldn't help but wonder....do you ever get used to it? No matter how hard my day was as a farmer....to look up and see that view...in all directions....would you ever want to leave?

I certainly didn't, but it was a long drive to Slovenia and it was already getting dark. Reluctantly, I packed up and headed back down the mountain.

Several of these butterflies were flying around close to the gravel road I was on and stopping to sip on something on the road. They would stay for several minutes and then leave, then return. By sipping moisture from mud puddles, butterflies take in salts and minerals from the soil in this case the road. The butterfly had been thru hard times with badly tattered wings.

Papilio palamedes, the Palamedes swallowtail or laurel swallowtail, is a North American butterfly in the family Papilionidae.

The wingspan ranges from 4 1⁄2 to 5 1⁄8 inches.

This species may be found in habitats such as cypress swamplands, coastal swamplands, wet riparian forests, bay forests, and savannas.

The Palamedes swallowtail is encountered from May to October in southeastern Virginia and from March to December in more southern regions. In Mexico it is represented by subspecies P. p. leontis.

Males seek females by patrolling near forest edges and forest openings. In courtship, the male and female will fly about a foot apart, slowly flying together in unison. The male will then fly above and behind the female to disperse his pheromones and he will continue to do this until the female decides to mate with him. - Wikipedia

Landscape photography can be quite painful and disappointing, when the weather is not on your side. But when mother Nature decides to make the show, it makes you forget right away all these hours of frustration. You have to be ready to spend days without making a good photo, but you can get sometimes loads of beautiful shots within 10 minutes. This is the rule of the game... A couple minutes before sunrise this westbound empty grain train hammer west towards Alta, IA, outside of Masonville. This train came out of the Gulf and is bound for western Iowa for loading back to the Gulf. The train is 35 miles east of Waterloo in eastern Iowa. Been awhile since multiple barns have lead trains in Iowa in 1 day. On 12/09... 3 trains had barns leading, and I was able to get 2 of them. 1st train of the day was this empty grain train at sunrise.

HWW! I took this a few minutes ago while lying on my couch to get a different angle. Such an incredible sky for all to enjoy, free of charge, just by looking up.

► █░▓ ≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ SUNRISE from behind an artificial vertical 'horizon'. The condo tower blocks my view of the natural horizon at 123° where the sunrise took place at 8:11 on November 22nd. So I had to wait another 9 minutes until the sun first appeared through a condo window. It was worth waiting.

The prominent church tower exactly 2 km (1,24 mi) from my lens belongs to St. Nichola's or Holy Spirit chapel. The chapel has been pulled down in 1835 but they fortunately kept the facade and this tower. The premises served as a charity spot (bread handed out to poor) until the various protestant denominations alternately got hold of it. The municipality got involved in the maintenance too. However, in 2011. it was all over. This very old chapel in Arkelstraat became a fashion clothing store ("Van Zuilen Mode"). A trend which by the way stormed the churches in the Lowlands at the turn of the century.

Left behind the church tower, at 8,3 km (5,17 mi) as the crow flies FeedValid animal feed and waste recycling factory in Munnikenland. It is difficult to believe that the distance between the church tower and the factory exceeds 6 km! Such is the perspective flattening of the 800 mm full-frame equivalent. It would take at least half an hour ride by car to get there, if not more.

To the right of the church tower are the two arms of the grain windmill "De Hoop", 500 m behind the church tower, marking the edge of the town and the river shore. The full view of the windmill and the old town's heart is blocked by the roof of the local hospital.

Exactly 2 km behind the church tower is the point where the river Maas (Meuse, "Afgedamde Maas" there) joins the Rhein's strongest branch Waal. The junction is the reason for Rhein to acquire yet another name, "Boven Merwede", which shall after 9 km split into Beneden Merwede and Nieuwe Merwede.

Hua Hin Railway Station is located minutes from the city centre and you can easily take a stroll and view it on the way to the central night market, which is just a few blocks away. The train station is a tourist landmark both for foreign and local tourists, but also still serves as the main rail link between Bangkok and the South of Thailand. The train station is so famous in Thailand it’s image is often depicted in Souvenirs and is synonymous with Hua Hin City.

The Hua Hin Railway station is one of the oldest stations in Thailand, the original structure was built in 1910 in Nakhon Pathom for the Sanam Chandra Palace for the Royal Family. In 1967 Colonel Chulacharit relocated the original structure from Sanam Chandra Palace to its current location making it the VIP room for the Royals when they needed to travel by train to or from Hua Hin. To this day, you can view the original portion built for the Royal family, now called the Royal Waiting room, inside the station compound

...the sun fell into the Pacific off Malibu.

Six minutes earlier birds were flying and chattering before the evening roost and the up lighting on the clouds was pleasing the landscape was bathed in subtle light (see the previous photo I posted for comparison). Tic toc six minutes later everything changed first a burst of wind ushered in ominous clouds laden with tropical moisture, shafts of rain streamed down followed by thunder and lightening. I shot a few frames from within the jeep and sat watching what was unfolding before my eyes. Taking heed to the knot in my stomach I headed back to camp in a torrential storm it felt like it was the longest 3 miles I'd ever driven. Back to camp I sat over an hour in the jeep before taking a chance to get in to the camper because there was so much lightning and that storm just sat overhead. I made it inside and later thought the storm was past only to be jolted by a bolt of lightening striking a tree nearby. The sound was loud as if someone had fired a shotgun next to me, the camper shook and the smell of sulfur was so strong inside the camper. That strike was too close for comfort the incident troubled me enough that I broke camp 2 days early. Summer camping in the lightening capital of the US may not be my cup of tea after all.
